This week's column talks about rib injuries, Tim Tebow and the wishful thinking of the NY Jets coaching staff

Most recent research about chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the brain damage that follows concussion, was published online yesterday. My summary and what the future might hold in this week's MDdirect/DocTalk column

Too many medical stories this weekend in sports. Fighters with concussions, quarterbacks with sprains and the sadness of drunk driving.

    Thanks for reading

Thanks LN. The drug companies hate me for even suggesting that many of their OTC meds are ineffective.

This week's DocTalk/MDdirect column is posted. Another weekend potpourri talking about Adrian Peterson's knee, Carmello Anthony's ankle and Matt Holliday's money.

    And a very quiet prayer

Winning football teams usually have good systems in place. Practice makes perfect in the ER, OR and gridiron. How trauma teams work.

Best wishes for a happy, healthy new year. Thanks for reading.

Non sports topic the first week back for 2013 but Hillary Clinton's cerebral vein thrombosis is a rare but cool diagnosis

Injuries require teams to change game plans and find backups to fill in. The game waits foro no team. The same is true in medicine and the list of drugs in the US that are in short supply or unavailable is growing. This week's column

Lance Armstrong cheated, got caught and lied about it. He was just a decade too early in trying to increase his performance using EPO and blood doping. Now it's legal but it takes planning.

Imagine getting football players from dozens of teams to figure out a common playbook and language in just a few days. No wonder that the Pro Bowl has less than stellar execution. Imagine dozens of doctors with their own dialect trying to talk with each other about a patient. Who knew that medical speak was really a Tower of Babel?

This week’s column tries to shed a little light or at least add to the confusion.
