Rajon Rondo and Lindsey Vonn get to share the same path to recovery for their knees. This week, it's about waht it takes to rehab an ACL injury.

This week's column talks about trying to find a new doc. Looking for recommendations from the NFL or NBA may not be the way to go. Elite athletes may wonder about conflict of interest. Is the doc caring for the player or the team?

AHL player Wade MacLeod gets checked into the board, suffers a head injury and is given an unexpected diagnosis.
Rules in sports. Guidelines in medicine. They aren't the same . This week's column

The word of the week is prioprioception. How it connects the knee of Derreck Rose and the elbow of Zack Greinke is the topic of this week's column

The Mets' David Wright damages his intercostal muscles again, giving me a chance to write about rib and chest wall injuries.

Disappointment is the word of the day. The new concussion guidelines released by the American Academy of Neurology give little in the way of guidance to athletes, coaches, parents and doctors.

I'm not certain why the Kevin Ware injury is being replayed online. It was terrible to watch n real time and I can't imagine the slow motion replay,up close and personal. It's been 28 years since Joe Theismann similarly had an open tib-fib fracture on Monday Night Football and that video still makes the round.

Still there are important stuff that can be learned from difficult injuries. This week's column talks about open fractures.

OK, I'm kind of new to this thread, so forgive me if my question isn't appropriately posed.

We have a soccer player here that was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia. He's taking a leave of absence to undergo treatment and the release says that he will not require hospitalization.

What kinds of treatment will he likely undergo, and what is the recovery time from diagnosis to returning to the field?

CML may be approached in many ways but often requires chemotherapy. Check with the player. He may be open to talking about what the future holds and what other treatment options were discussed.

As for return to play? every patient responds to care in a different way. Perhaps you might look at how the press approached Kevin Ware and allow his care to be a side bar to the championship run.

This week's column strays from sport. Margaret Thatcher died because of stroke, the third leading cause of death. Hopefully a public education opportunity to teach people to seek emergency care immediately. Waiting is deadly.
