Let's DocTalk about gallstones, can we?

Namely, once my wife has her gallbladder removed...will I ever be able to eat with her again?

Kidding aside, any idea as to the after affects of having no bile?

Your wife's liver still makes bile. Her bile ducts have been reconnected so that hepatic duct (the one in the liver) attaches directly to her common bile to deliver bile to her small intestine to aid in food digestion. The pancreatic duct also attaches to the common bile duct as well, so her plumbing should be normal for many years to come.

Even billionaires are not immune from the hubris that is DWI and narcotic abuse. Such is the sadness that befalls Jim Irsay. This week's DocTalk column

Can you say spondylolysis? Kansas 7 footer Joel Embiid wishes he didn't know the medical term for lumbar stress fracture and Jayhawk fans wish his back had been healthy,

At the end of the Wisconsin-Arizona game, I watched how replay affected the fan experience and altered the art of the game. The same issues exist when high tech imposes itself upon medical care and the approach to diagnosis...not always for the good. This week's column:

Omar Infante takes a fastball to the jaw and gets two injuries for the price of one. Aside from the laceration, there is concern for both a mandible fracture and a concussion. DocTalk column connects both:

A day late this week's column, perhaps can be blamed on starting a stretch of night shifts. Thanks for reading.

Jordan Spieth wins the Masters and nobody cares that he left college early to turn pro. College football is another story and this week's column talks about why the NFL needs players to stay in school.

And a thank you goes out to Twitter and Bomani Jones for this week's inspiration

Sudden death in the NHL playoffs is amazing sport but in real life, sudden death is not so good. This week's column explains just a little about the heart's electricity and it's ability to short circuit.

Statistics in baseball help tell the story but not so in medicine. Looking at the statistics related to smoking, lung cancer, taxes and the funds allocated to research and there may be another story thread behind death and taxes. The strength of NBA's Adam Silver and why Congress and the President should learn from his leadership. Death by numbers in this week's column and how millions of lives could be saved, not to mention the billions of dollars.

It's not often that the NBA and peewee hockey can share headlines. Paul George's concussion is front and center but the American Academy of Pediatrics' guidelines for injury prevention in youth hockey may as well be hidden, having been released on the Monday of a long weekend. It also doesn't help that their recommendations should have come about years ago. Hidden no longer

California Chrome and nasal strips. They may work...or not. The ambiguity of scientific research.
