We run his column out here -- in the features section.

I'll bet Marvez scoops lots of people who tune in to WWE programming. He's probably got the night's script in front of him.

Have broken chicken wings with Marvez, Cole and Skolnick too, and all of them were great.

You can know all you want about the guy's background. I don't care. I'm responding as a reader of his work. We write for our readers, not people who know how you got the job or how old you were when you got it or whether you give money to the United Way or what your favorite breakfast cereal is. I know him as most any other reader who first noticed him as a pro wrestling writer would know him.

Sorry I struck a nerve with a personal observation. It's the way I feel and I don't give a shit what the background is. So save your silly finger wagging.

I'll take your word for it that Marvez is a great guy. Doesn't affect what I think of the mind-set of someone who has banged the drum for a spectacle my 8-year-old nephew recently decided was too juvenile for his tastes.

P.S. The quote function on this site blows.

  5. If the Dolphins writers are so great, how come no one has cracked Nick Saban's defense bubble yet and got the coach to sit down and really talk about anything and everything? A 70-inch story in which Saban is pinned down and make to open up and really talk about all things Dolphins.

Those on the Dolphins beat these days should be trying to bust down some walls and tackle some real meat, reminding Saban that the newspapers fuel the fan support and the nationwide interest in what's going on with a team that could either A) have some stunning successs this season, or B) not quite reach the heights the rabid fans are hoping for.

Fans want more than the secretive responses Saban gives to any and every question. We expect the reporters to dig in and get the right answers. So I'm asking for a little more digging here, to make Saban open up as he should, and then we can say the reporters are busting ass.

Otherwise, it's the Bush press room all over again.

Push the envelope. Ask the tough questions. And then always demand a legitimate reponse.

Like Reagan said, "Tear this wall down." I'm still waiting for the inside stories I want to read.

I agree with that 100 percent. Add the fact the Dolphins have one of the most beloved and accommodating PR men in the business and yet still no one has broken through. That makes the situation even more disconcerting.

  7. The idea that the Dolphins "need us" is, unfortunately, an archaic concept.

Nick Saban let ESPN cameras tag along on his vacation escape to Dixie. Do you think that had anything to do with the millions that ESPN pours into the NFL?

I think it's a positive reflection on the writers that cover the team that Saban barely says shit to any of them...

To get Saban to trust you, you would have to kiss his ass for so long that your credibility would be shot.

Keep in mind, this is a coach who makes every single assistant off limits and got rid of the media workrooms and if I'm not mistaken, got rid of media parking and several other things...

I applaud the South Florida media for not getting close to the guy.

Even Bob Knight had reporters he allowed inside. Yes, there was the kiss-ass editor from Bloomington, but there also were some who didn't pull punches that he respected enough to grant access. DeFord, Feinstein, the Schaaps come to mind on a national level. I'm sure there are others.

You said "giving a kid a column is silly." That's what I quoted and responded to, because you clearly did not know what you were talking about.

As for his credibility with readers, Marvez's wrestling column clearly did not bother the editors of the major metros that employed him and the others that made him an offer. People of average intelligence or better see it as harmless fun.

Getting access as a national guy is about 1,000X easier than as the everyday beat writer...

I don't know if this story is true, but I've heard it a few times... When there was an opening at one of the papers that covers the Dolphins, Saban called the SE and recommended someone who had covered him when he was at LSU. I'm not going to put the guy's name out here, but needless to say the paper didn't hire him...
