Yeah, I'm sort of curious about that too. I'll hang up and listen.

Apparently, he has theories about where homosexuality comes from, too, but lacks either the conviction or the courage to state them.

WriteThinking offered a very well-worded post that he obviously put a great deal of thought into. Unfortunately, it comes from a place of intolerance.

If so, then SHE posted that from a place of intolerance.

I wasn't intolerant. I was out of town and busy. If I was intolerant, I wouldn't discuss the matter at all, or want to do so.

As it is, I might be one of the most tolerant people you'd ever meet. I can actually talk or write about something without jumping to the most extreme assumption about somebody just because they don't unequivocally support something, or not.

I said I was conflicted about the issue, and I am. I said that I highly doubt that I'm the only who is, and I still think that.

I won't state what I think might be possibilities about sexual orientation because I have no proof; it's just something I've thought and wondered about. If I ever learn or come to believe otherwise with real certainty, well, then my perspective will change along with the new information.

Not everyone's opinions are simply black and white. If they were, that would more likely result in and more accurately be described as intolerance.

    Thanks, WriteThinking.
    Plenty of people are conflicted.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

You wrote about being offended by images of same-sex couples.

You question where homosexuality comes from. I say question because you are saying there is some source, as if it is different from the source of your heterosexuality, but refuse to even say what is on your mind.

I'm not saying that you have to support gay marriage or this specific ruling, but there is a refusal on your part to accept those relationships and that is a certain amount of intolerance.

Your statement that you would avoid the topic completely if you were intolerant is just ridiculous. There are plenty of people who are intolerant of homosexuality and gay marriage who have no problem speaking on the subject.

I do think that a lot of what people consider right and wrong is just intuition then confirmed by reason. Jonathan Haidt illustrated this in a very good book I've been reading about moral psychology. Ultimately, though, I think that people owe it to themselves to trace those moral beliefs to some sort of root. Particularly when in condemnation of another person. In an age of enlightenment, I don't feel like "just because" or "it offends me" quite cuts it. Even if one is just looking to back their intuition with reason, at least go through the motions. You might surprise yourself. I've developed much more nuanced opinions while trying to simply prove what I already thought. Maybe not in morals, which I don't really believe in as something apart from our social structure, but certainly in policy and economics.

I think we need to welcome people's responses rather than hurl accusations and recriminations if those responses are thoughtful and honest. How else can there be any real dialogue?

Wanna take the name-calling back to the poo-flinging thread so that people can continue to have intelligent discussion here?
