I think those comments help him rather than hurt him.

He doubles down with the base who are inclined to agree and probably picks up some people who at least respect his honesty.

No different to me than some of those who possess the loony born again values that I would not want anywhere near the White House either.

*Unless Starman, whose status as a nascent polymath was solidified in the fourth grade, wants that one.

 

A pretty fair percentage of the hardcore right wing base is arch-conservative Catholic.

When Carson's endorsement of the SDA's virulent anti-Catholicism goes widely public, the shit will really hit the fan (unless Carson has already slid so far down the pecking order nobody cares anymore).

Although they haven't seemed to be too upset with the strong presence in the RWNJ base of bible-thumping KKK Southern Baptists and full-throttle secret-underwear Mormons, two groups notorious for unapologetic and very vocal anti-Catholicism.

The teabag party can blow off Muslims, who include something like 4% of the US population, and they don't care.

But some 25% of the US population still at least technically identifies as Catholic, even if an awful lot of them rarely if ever go to church anymore; that's a pretty big bloc of voters to blow off.
