Because polling data shows that while normal conspiracy theories are plotted fairly evenly across demographic spreads, birthers are overwhelmingly white, southern, rabidly conservative and poorly educated. This isn't the Kennedy assasination.

So, white, southern, conservative, and poorly educated people are racist?

    You're cute. Really.

Are more likely to be racist. Yup.

Speaking of Mississippi specifically, which is full of white, southern, conservative and poorly educated people, a majority of that state's Republicans want to outlaw interracial marriage.

Please don't make me go look for the link, but I assure you the poll just happened like last week.

Don't have any data on that, my Socratic Barista Wonder.

Then to what do you attribute birtherism, Carlton?

    Besides utter stupidity, of course.

Wish I still had the copy handy, but several months ago there was a poll -- AP, I think, but not positive -- that asked people if they believed Obama was born in the US. If the respondent said no, they asked where he was born.

Only 7% of the birthers "correctly" answered Kenya.

    8% said Hawaii.

One last point about this. Comparisons to Kennedy assassination conspiracy beliefs are specious to the max. First, large majorities of Americans have held the belief Oswald did not act alone since the assassination itself -- including President Lyndon Baines Johnson. Second, the reason people believe this is not murky. Oswald got murdered in the basement of a police station on national TV!! That's not like "where's the birth certificate?" That's a shocking event that would make anyone suspicious of the official story.
There is no equivalent event in the birther conspiracy that would explain why anyone would hold that belief. And I really do not understand why the conservatives on this board so desperately want to explain away the "event" that so obviously is the wellspring of this belief. You're not responsible for the prejudices of others, anymore than I am for statements of insanity by persons on the left.

That could all be summed up by saying "MY conspiracy theory is different." :)

I don't remember anybody questioning where George W. Bush was born.
