The drip-drip-drip of "birther" propaganda is part of a general, persistent assault on the legitimacy of immigrants and non-whites in American culture. Lurking behind the rhetoric of "I want my country back" is a simple refusal to recognize the citizenship, or even the humanity, of anyone but white males.

    Carlton:

I'm not saying that racism is the main motivation for birtherism.

But you're either in denial or hopelessly naive if you don't at least consider the idea that yeah, racism might be a factor for some.

Despite your best efforts at passing wishful thinking off as fact, the reality is not as easy as you think. Everyone who opposes Obama isn't doing so for noble reasons. There are some folks in this country who are beside themselves at the idea that a black man is President. Be honest.

I don't think it's as simple as racism. There are other -isms in the mix too

A black man with a funny-sounding name as POTUS will cause the wingnuts, racists and "Muslims are all evil" folks to congeal into a heaving mass of stupidity.

Dave, I admitted in my post that some birthers are racist...just like there are racists that are regular readers of the Daily KOS and HuffPost. I know there are racists in all walks of life, but on the whole I do not think race is the motivating factor for the Birther movement.
And although I do not question Obama's birthplace, people claiming that Obama "released his birth certificate" are not exactly being honest. He released a much-disputed certificate of live birth that has a few question marks.

Like I said, he was born in Hawaii. However, those that are trying to say he has cleared this all up, end of story, are the same type of people who claim the "science is settled" regarding man-made global warming. It isn't. And Obama has not exactly been forthcoming about his birth certificate.
Truthfully he should have said, from the beginning, "I don't have a birth certificate in Hawaii. I have no idea what happened to it." Because, honestly, I do not think he does have one...I think he either was not issued one when he was born or something happened to it somewhere along the way. This does not prove anything as far as what the birthers would like you to think...I think the birth announcements in the paper make it certain he was born in Hawaii.

    Carlton,
He did release his birth certificate. If you were born in Hawaii and you ask for a certified copy of your birth certificate, you get what he gets.
The documents meets all U.S. State Department requirements. You can get a driver's license or a passport with it. You can register your kid for Little League with one.
If you look at the bottom of it, you'll see a statement that it serves as prima facie evidence in all court proceedings. No other document is needed to verify the information that is on it.
So what question marks could there possibly be?

Check the link I provided...there are some issues with what was presented as the COLB.

I did. It's horseshit. Factcheck.org vouched for its authenticty, as did the former Hawaii DOH director (in a Republican administration).

Well, if someone on a blog posts some unverifiable claims, then they must be credible and taken seriously.

FactCheck.org posting something about it? Hmmmmm....who funds that particular website?
Anyway, my point is that there are a TON of questions about the document that was proffered. Here are some more:

    Lots of links here: http://www.wnd.com/eligibility

To say that the COLB that was posted is irrefutable proof and ends the debate is inaccurate. There seem to be plenty of reasonable questions about it. If you choose to ignore these questions it isn't a very big deal because, like I have said, I think he was born in Hawaii. But I can understand why people would question the COLB.

WORLD Exclusive: Donald Trump to Announce His Run for President

    Wednesday, 13 Apr 2011 07:45 PM

If you wonder whether Donald Trump is serious about running for president, tune in to the finale of “The Celebrity Apprentice” on May 15.

Trump plans to say on the NBC show that he will be holding a press conference a few days after the May 15th show. At that press conference in the Trump Tower in New York, Trump will be announcing his candidacy for the presidency.

Even then, many will snicker that it’s all a publicity stunt. But that defies the facts and common sense.

Of all the people on the planet, Donald Trump is the last person who needs more publicity. And if he is riding a groundswell of support, why would he—or anyone else—decide not to run?

Carlton, go back and read this article that someone posted earlier:

    It really leaves no doubt.
