What are the pressing issues within the transgender community? Anyone care to enlighten us?

    Barrage and mealth dare?

But, we should be so concerned about their treatment that we are offended at this article and yes they should be allowed... Oh wait... Let me check the narrative...

Acceptance and personal safety are among the foremost.

That's fine. But, if your allowed to take some time in your evolution of the normalcy of gender reassignment, and if Rob Portman and Barrack Obama are allowed time for their views on gay marriage to evolve, that why shouldn't older Americans, or the religious, be afforded the same time to evolve on issues involving gay rights, without being demonized?

They certainly should be. That doesn't mean I won't press the issue and challenge them in the meantime. I would expect transgender advocates to do the same.

How does Hannan's article set those back? Dr. V took her own life, and did it for reasons we don't fully know yet - gender reassignment is only one of several possibilities.

And, the thing is, while not being able to marry the person you love is a terrible thing -- and it is -- the Transgender community truly lives in fear. That's pretty different.

I brought up the case of Islan Nettles here -- and Christina Kahrl mentioned her in her own column -- but folks didn't want to talk about the issue.

It is African-American and Hispanic transgender women who face the greatest threat, a threat that comes from within their own racial and ethnic communities.

I do believe that too few people want to discuss this fact. And, if you raise it, you are accused of trying to deflect from the racial issues in other communities, or of just trying to start trouble.

Islan Nettles death did not "start a conversation" that needs to be had. Maybe this column will.

It's pretty to think so but if 20 Newtown kids getting shot to death didn't move the gun debate needle even a millimeter, it's pretty much unlikely that the trans* conversation is starting any time soon.

I imagine that 99.9 percent of Americans are united in the belief that transgendered African-Americans should not be murdered.

Eh, that .1 percent will still rule the day.

Nope. Their biggest problem is people like...

Do you think a lack of acceptance might play a part in the high suicide rates?

Hannan treats her status a freakish -- the ultimate discovery in a wild ride of unmasking a "mysterious" woman man.

And, now there's a backlash against the backlash. If you were a transgender woman, would you feel like this article helped or hurt your cause?
