But he now supports gay marriage and marriages between transsexuals and others, which is very progressive thinking.

I will say this: Liberal journalists wasted little time in calling Bradley Manning "Chelsea." In this week's New Republic piece on leakers, the writer notes, without missing a beat, that "Chelsea Manning" leaked stuff to WikiLeaks. Chelsea Manning did no such thing, but Bradley Manning sure did.

Depends. What's the style for that kind of thing?

Now? Were you under some other perception?

Do you somehow think you "trapped" me into this position based on this issue?

I understood that part. I'm talking more about Dick's contention. Yes, at the time "Bradley" did what he did. New Republic's writer said "Chelsea" did what he did, and Dick said that is not the case. How is that reconciled?

If a story came out now that Barack Obama had done something unsavory during his time in the Senate, would you refer to him in the story as "Sen. Barack Obama," or "President Barack Obama?"

I suppose the best analogue would be married names. I've seen it both ways, i.e., "Hillary Rodham grew up in the Chicago area," or, "Hillary Clinton grew up in the Chicago area." When people talk about the college basketball career of the Bucks and Lakers HOF center, do they write "Lew Alcindor" or "Kareem Abdul Jabaar"?

I'd guess media would honor religious name preferences similarly.

"Muhammad Ali first became heavyweight champion when he beat Sonny Liston."

If you want to add, "then known as Cassius Clay," go ahead. It's not necessary, though.

Regardless, I think the quick adoptation of "Chelsea" was indicative that journalists aren't quite as insensitive to trans-gender issues as YF thinks they are.

We all agree that you shouldn't insult a person by calling them "gay" as if there's something wrong, something weak, something less than all male about being gay, right?

The Ad Council even put out ads to educate teens about his.

But, let's not forget how Keith Olbermann shot back at Ann Coulter four years ago:

“If this guy wants to live his life as a woman, I’m gonna back his choice up 100%.”

LOL. So funny, right? SHE'S A DUDE!

But, hey, that led to a national conversation, and Keith was drummed out of polite society, never to be heard from again.

The day Manning's lawyer announced her gender identity, GLAAD put out a media advisory, instructing journalists on how to report the issue:

    http://www.glaad.org/blog/reporting-private-chelsea-manning-consistent-respect-gender-identity

It pointed to AP Style Book guidelines.

This was pretty big news, and it would have been hard for the media to miss this. To handle it differently would have been to ignore specific advice, and would have been pretty obvious.

Without a media advisory, Grantland had no idea how to handle Dr. V's story.

So, yeah, they are/were insensitive when someone isn't holding their hand.
