One thing I want to note: Back when Elena Kagan was nominated for the Supreme Court, I stated that I believed journalistic inquiries into her sexual orientation were acceptable, because she could possibly be deciding major gay rights cases. (Which turned out to be true, no surprise.)

A lot of posters disagreed with me. Vehemently.

Hannan's major mistake, as far as I can tell, was to agree to tell the story "about the science and not the scientist."

I would never do the story if I had to agree to certain conditions beforehand. I certainly wouldn't agree to those conditions and then go back on my word.

And, they've not properly addressed this issue.

The outing doesn't bother me as much as treating the outing as the cherry on top of all the other deceptions, causing a "chill" to go up the writer's spine. I understand the instinct to think, "Holy shit, another discrepancy between public and private life!" But he should have pushed through that and realized that it wasn't of a kind with the other discoveries.

MC, if you want to argue that we had a "national conversation" in light of Islan Nettles murder, go ahead and say so.

    I will argue it.

No one is in custody for her murder.

Her name is not nearly as recognizable as Matthew Shepard's.

The cause to seek justice for Shepard, or Trayvon Martin, was taken up broadly, by people outside the gay, and/or African-American community. I see very little effort outside the small trans community to seek justice for Islan.

Yes. He found a unicorn. He found a leprechaun at the end of the rainbow.

She was treated like the bearded lady at the sideshow. Come, look at the freak I found.

I'm 110% with you on that. It was tone-deaf.

    Did Caleb discover something horrible?

Did he make an agreement with Dr. V, and subsequently violate that agreement?

No one is in custody for Nettles' death because the police can't fucking figure out which of two black guys did it, because they "look alike." You want to blame that on a lack of activism?
