But in an early email to Vanderbilt provided by Jordan, Hannan wrote: “I'm happy to keep my conversation with you to the science, not the scientist. When can you talk?”

Hannan still won't go on the record. (He'll give a fuller response, "when he is ready")

Simmon's has put this behind him.

Yes. Tricky to write about "the science, not the scientist" where there is no science, and she's not a scientist.

Jonathan Mahler in the Times, on Dr. V and how we fetishize long-form:

Good piece by Mahler. I've had many of those same concerns/reservations of late. The SI Tebow story is another good example of praise just because something exists, I think.

    Yes.

And, after he learned some of the falsehoods, which in his mind included her gender, he went back to her, and confronted her with the information.

So, at most (re: the agreement), he was in the wrong by ... calling her back. To keep to the agreement he should have just published it without trying to talk to her again. This would be true, per your reading of the situation, even had she never been a he. The reporter would have abrogated the agreement simply by calling back to discuss credential/background information even had there been no sex change.

So, what are we at, day 8 since young, 31-year-old Caleb has said anything publicly?

Well, in the absence of anything new from him, let's take a look at the young man's views on journalistic ethics. What are the kinds of things that would offend Caleb.

Let's get it started with the recent controversy regarding Bill Keller of the New York Times, his wife, and the woman who "over shared" about her medical treatments on her own blog:

    So, let's sum it up.

Just days before his much criticized piece goes live, young Caleb obsesses (to use Double J's term) about a Keller column.

He thinks the reporting is creepy. he thinks it's dehumanizing. He suggests that Keller deserves any lack of civility that comes his way as a result of the article.

And, in a theme we'll see more of, he has a distaste for the idea of a quais-apology.

Does your house have mirrors Caleb?

Did you consider how dehumanizing your piece was? Where's your apology, quasi, or otherwise?

You know what ethical issue really burns young Caleb: ESPN not properly crediting a story to another news organization. He even gets into it with (while still trying to kiss the ass of) a big time long form writer:

Caleb Hannan: very sensitive to the big issues facing journalists.

In June, Vice, a publication nobody much cares about removed a controversial photo spread from its website after it received some criticism:

Boy, did Caleb obsess about this:

It should be pretty clear by now that Caleb doesn't like quasi-apologies or non-apology apologies.

Maybe the reason we've heard nothing from him is because he's not sorry. I sure hope he doesn't lack the courage of his convictions and allow himself to be forced into making a statement he doesn't believe.

One last episode of young Caleb lectures on ethics:

We clearly see Hannan is not afraid to call out ethical lapses when he sees them. Why is he afraid to defend his own?
