How many pieces that appear in BASW require the parent company to put out a statement saying they will "learn from this"?

The reporting, and story telling, had major flaws. Obvious flaws.

There's no way this ends up in BASW.

The telling may have had flaws. The reporting didn't.

He outed her to someone in the course of his reporting. Needlessly.

"Outed" is just a word that attempts to make telling the truth sinister. If you're happy with or proud of who you are, you can never be "outed."

    That's a gray area, YF.

    Jesus.

It's not a question being "proud" or not.

Transgendered people deal with all kinds of emotions, including shame. The suicide rate for transgendered women is extremely high. They deal with issues like abuse, and rape, at rates that are much higher than other women.

They have an absolutely legitimate fear regarding being outed.

What the reporter did in outing her -- and he did out her -- was sinister. He did it for shock value. He did it to see how surprised the investor was. He wanted to see how embarrassed he was, having previously described her as good looking. And, he was disappointed when the investor took the news calmly, instead of having a chill run up his spine.

    Why?

In some circumstances, I could see where a reporter and a source sharing information might lead to a fuller understanding of a person or a situation.

That wasn't the case here. He learned nothing new about Dr. V by his sharing the information with the investor. He did it purely for shock value. Purely to see his reaction.

I don't think he experienced an actual chill up his spine -- that's just dumb writing.

But I don't think he was disappointed when the investor took the news calmly. Everyone reacts to shock value differently.

I do kind of wonder if the investor, before knowing what he was told, was hoping to get a piece of Dr. V in exchange for the $60K. You know, he'd be the guy who helped push her invention over the edge and she'd thank her financial knight in shining armor by ...

Correlation does not equal causation. The thought processes that lead someone think they're supposed to be a different gender could be the same thought processes that contribute to suicidal tendencies.

I mean, we're talking about someone who was born a man, then transgendered to a woman and then chose to date a woman after transitioning to a woman. Let's be real here. This person had already attempted suicide before ever meeting the author. Anyone trying to blame the writer here is ignoring how entirely fucked-up the subject was long before she/he ever met the writer. And in ignoring all that, you're also ignoring that her resume was a fraud, too.

You seem to think there's absolutely no way she killed herself because of this.
