Let's just go ahead and get to the heart of the matter.

I think everybody toys around with the idea that, "I'll be a better writer after a beer. It will calm me down. The words will come more easily."

People say the same thing about driving, even when studies show that's not the case-- 100% of the time.

I toyed around with the idea my freshman year in college that I'd write better after a beer or two. Went out with friends one afternoon, had 2 Bud Lites, came back and sat down to write my paper. Handed it in the next morning.

    Got an F.

    That answered that question. ;D

That's what you get for drinking Bud Lite, Luggie.

    Ever so true.

    Now, writing when stoned... ;)

Bob L., I agree with your wife, the doctor.

yes, you are home, but it is the idea of being professional. You wouldn't do that while you were in the office, so you shouldn't do it while you are writing at home. The point is to do the job and then, if you want, have a brew.

I've never had a drink of alcohol in my life. But, oddly, the only times I've wanted one is when I'm working on a gamer. :D

Indeed. I've never smoked a cigarette, either. But I've strangley wanted one when a day at the office was a big, fat pain in the ass.

Seriously, for a guy who has never had a drop of alcohol, why did I get the urge to drink when deadline/writer's block/idiots were upon me?

    That is an interesting question.

i'm in a different profession now (law) and i see people drinking at lunch. not a lot of people do it and i'm fairly sure they don't drink much. but i've been out to lunch with lawyers who have had a glass of wine with their meal.

once the guy who drank even drove us back to the office! yes, really! i didn't even think to question his abilities. most adults don't get drunk or in any way impaired after one drink other than maybe a momentary buzz that dissipates after a few moments.

You can't take centuries of instincts away from man. We hunt, we have sex, we drink. Some other stuff, too, I'm sure, but I'm having trouble thinking of it right now.
