"Eating from a can"

He has changed the lyrics in concert sometimes to "early evening, April 4," which is more historically accurate, but he says it doesn't flow as well, to his own ears.

Last I read of him commenting on it, he said:

1, "it's wrong, I'm sorry";
2, "I fixed the lyrics but it sounds awkward when I sing it," and
3, "if the main effect has been that people go back and look up the original stories and learn more about MLK himself, maybe it's not a bad thing."

 

I still remember being grossed out by a criminal eating dog food out of can on Hawaii Five-0.

Baked beans out of a can is good. Most other stuff needs to be heated.

 

That song is approaching 40 years old and I never noticed that. And it was easily remedied. "Early evening, April 4" would have worked metrically.

 

I always thought Billy Joel was off his rocker when he described Billy the Kid as a legend "east and west of the Rio Grande."

Then I went to New Mexico and discovered that once you get west of El Paso, the Rio Grande does indeed curve north and splits much of New Mexico right down the middle. So, since Billy spent almost all of his time in New Mexico, he was indeed a legend in his time, east and west of the Rio Grande.

I'm sure Billy ate some beans out of a can, too.
