Elon Musk takes over Twitter

You’d think Elon would be more inclined to support the re-election of a CiC who gives his company a $1.8 billion contract over a guy who undoubtedly will kill off any programs designed to impede Russia or China.

I have this belief that Apartheid Elon is assuming that the Trump takeover will bankrupt the Republican party (certainly possible) and he can basically buy one of the two major political parties in the country. So he's possibly playing the long game here.

I think you’re giving his intellect too much credit. He talks like every Rogan stoner these days.

Fewer people can use Twitter, but is there evidence a mass of people have moved over to a specific alternative platform? Until that happens, Twitter isn't going away.

I could certainly see it going away, not because of anything to do with its users, but because the business itself is incinerating cash. Elon Musk loaded it with debt financing to buy it and the platform doesn't earn anything and is actually probably losing more and more as time goes on. Musk has to keep reaching into his own pocket to pay the nut on that debt. The business only exists as long as he is willing to tolerate eating $1.2 billion a year to make interest payments to some banks. Maybe he will, he's a shithead. But that is a lot of money being flushed away, even for him, and at some point when his attention fix has run its course, I totally wouldn't be surprised to see him quietly slink away from it.

In terms of average monthly users, Twitter is tiny by social media standards, FWIW. Twitter is right around Reddit in terms of its usage. It's not even as widely used as Sina Weibo, which I am sure few people on here have even heard of it. It could disappear tomorrow without an exact replacement platform and it wouldn't be anything like if say Instagram or YouTube went poof.

Yup. A diminishing Twitter is still infinitely more popular than the alternatives. It has a decade-plus built-in advantage as a social media staple. The only real other option is Bluesky, which is terrible. I tried it, but it's a giant echo chamber of people alternating between doomscrolling about the state of the world and chortling about how bad Twitter is. Yeah no shit. I can do all of that on Twitter with the added bonus of knowing Elon is coked out of his mind and reading every negative Tweet about him and his shitty platform.

I don't think he's making smart moves...He just wants to own a political party in this country and feels like he has the money to do. And he might be right.
