Erin Andrews and the Cubs locker room: Discuss

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by hondo, Jul 31, 2008.

  1. It becomes your problem when the source begins to like that kind of treatment and favor that journalist, which happens. Nobody is spreading stories here. I'm not mentioning any names. But I've witnessed this kind of stuff first-hand, which is why Nadel's account rings so true. This is standard business conduct kind of stuff; in the same vein, we'd rip Stuart Scott (or any print journalist) for trading a fist pound with an athlete. But hey, if you want to trivialize it, go right ahead.

Actually, WNBA locker rooms are open. For what it's worth, no, I never touched a player's biceps.

No, but there's an awful lot of ground between that and rip job.

And, btw, columns aren't objective, they reflect the writer's personal viewpoint.

I'd say it's worse. Instead of an opinionated rant about the necessity of eye candy reporters, etc., he describes her actions, demeanor and dress while doing her job all in negative terms.

Maybe he's accurately painting the picture. I wasn't there, but he seems a wee bit jealous to me.

I think the column is certainly silly, and it doesn't help his credibility to write a sports column on the allure of a female sports personality rather than maybe some actual sports-related issue. I can't pretend to know what the appropriate length of a person's skirt should be to "appear" professional, and I doubt this guy knows either. However, while I'm sure Ms. Andrews is a hard worker, I can't pretend she wasn't helped along by her looks and that there aren't better and more professional female reporters out there (several at ESPN even). However, since she is on TV and part of an entertainment business more than a news business, I don't really care. I kind of agree with a co-worker though who suggested Andrews prefers to be the story rather than get the story, so she might rather enjoy this person's uninteresting column.

Players 'favor' different reporters/journos/broadcasters for a vast variety of reasons. Maybe a player favors a reporter who speaks his language, or plays golf, or has a sick kid, or asks really great questions. Maybe he favors the guy who writes nice things about him, or he favors the woman with big boobs.

In general, however, I don't know too many women who walk into the locker room planning to nab a big story with their boobs. It's a convenient accusation for guys who didn't get the story themselves, though.

Oh please. He said she wore a "skimpy outfit," played the "sexpot" and touched a player "suggestively." You don't want to call that a rip job, fine, call it something else. The point is, in addition to the flaws other people have already pointed out, the column was lazy. Instead of just pontificating about Andrews, he could have done a minimal amount of reporting and at least attempted to talk to her since she was right there in front of him. If he still wanted to rip her, fine. At least he would have been giving a more informed opinion instead of just getting up on a soapbox.

Berman is a sexpot. Have you seen the size of his rack?

You are OK with her touching a player like that?

Wait a second... it certainly as hell would be. Wouldn't it?

I would be shocked if a male creating a hostile work environment such as touching a female athlete wasn't outed.
