I think Hondo is a tool for the most part, Dickens, but legally, he's dead on. The rules in this regard apply to everyone.

But again, it's less a question of legality to me than it is professionalism. Just ... don't ... do ... it.

This is precisely where a little actual reporting would have come in handy, and why something more than "observation" of a scene was needed.

Whether it was required, in your view, or not, it would have been the right thing to do. And Nadel didn't. That remains the whole, real problem here.

You and I are in agreement, Write. I've been saying exactly that since early in the thread.

Nineteen pages later, I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me the point of this piece and for whom it was written.

I guess my question would be this: What, exactly, is the true definition of "Dirty old man"?

Does anyone ever use the term "Dirty young man"?

Are all "Dirty old men" formerly "Clean young men"? Or were they "Dirty young men?" Or were some clean and some dirty? And was it getting old that made them dirty or was it getting dirty that made them old?

Is every "old" man who looks at a pretty young woman a "dirty" old man? Because if so, I think that would make about 100% of men over the age of (pick your threshold) a dirty old man.

I've got big problems with her touching him in the manner that she described, but that doesn't change the way I feel about the column.

I said earlier it was possible both were in the wrong, and that seems to be the case. . . at least in my world.
