It'll be about this plucky internet startup in Pierre, South Dakota, that corners the world rights on Canadian professional lacrosse and makes a mint in 2023.

Clay Travis is not a good writer. I won't comment on the kind of person he is.

But he's right about ESPN. He's been right about ESPN for awhile and he's right here, too.

And when ESPN loses $7 a month, Fox only loses $3 (or whatever). Throw in what ESPN has spent on rights fees in comparison to Fox/NBC. Does Disney start moving more sports content over to ABC?

Cable is in an industry in decline. My 24 year old son web builder son assures me the technology is obsolete. I think sports rights in gneral have reached a peak. I think that the NFL will suffer less damage than other leagues because it is still the most popular sport.

I am sure the NFL will want an increase in rights next time. I don't think they will get it. ESPN made a massive overpay last time they got the contract. The other carriers paid one billion and ESPN basically paid two. What happens if ESPN bids a billion and wins? The players get 55% of the television revenue. Which means the 32 teams have 450 million a year less to divide up or about 13-14 million a team. An NFL team can absorb that hit.

Because I'm not comfortable calling the guy a horrible person or a great person.

I don't know of many 20 somethings who have moved out and bought cable/satellite. My college age son has some set up that doesn't include cable in his apartment. My daughter has moved back in with us to go to grad school, and we put a flat screen on a bracket mount in her bedroom. No cable wanted, the roku/firestick is all she wants.

I still get the call from my 20-something kids for the Verizon ID and Password to watch things. But for the most part, they survive without it. OTOH, I'm still wired, with HBO, Showtime,Cinemax, TMC, AMC, and about 2 dozen other movie channels, plus all the ESPN channels, MASN 1&2, FS1, CBSSports, Comcast Sports... paying lots of money. I even have a landline, which I don't use.

My god, you are old. Do you still subscribe to the print edition of a newspaper?
