ESPN can't afford Monday Night Football any longer

    Do both. If I care enough to watch an entire sports event, I want the big screen experience. If I don't, well, maybe I'll check the phone for updates.

    Given the demographics of newspaper subscribers I would be shocked if you are under 40 and surprised if you are under 50. And sadly I am not gloating because for me my 50th birthday was a long time ago.

    Indeed it's pretty easy to Google the team on your phone to get a live update.

    "Update" is one thing. "Watching" them is another. And I, too, have zero interest in "watching" something on a phone. My phone is for information, not entertainment.

    With SJ I get both, and almost exclusively with my phone.

    Not quite 40 and I almost never watch video on my phone, unless it's a quick YouTube clip.

    Monday Night Football is the TV equivalent of a big house that used to be in a great neighborhood. Now it's in a rundown neighborhood because the best people left for the more trendy suburb of Sunday Night Football.

    ESPN needs to get out and focus elsewhere.

    Even when ESPN had Sunday Night Football, which started 30 years ago for goodness sake's, I found myself watching less on Monday night. Now, I watch maybe two, three Monday games a season and almost never last past halftime.

    RedZone is the greatest, and the unintended consequences of it are that after 7 hours of nonstop football, without commercials, I’ve had it with the NFL for the week.

    There's only so much football any person can watch before saturation is reached. The NFL and its broadcast partners have found the saturation point for millions of their customers and are paying the price for overexpansion. It's an old familiar business story.

    Goodell sets revenue goal of $25B by 2027 for NFL

    The seeds of its own "destruction" (really the NFL is doing fine). The plan was to "breakout" more games and diminish the number that were in essence competing against other content for eyeballs.

    MNF became a colossus as the Sunday losers tried to win it all back on one game.
