I was never a big pregame watcher but they have become irrelevant in the age of social media. If anything important happens just before game time, even news which is broken on one of the shows, it is tweeted out.

I've gone from edge of my seat for College Gameday to listening to the live stream of the morning Shutdown Fullcast because that dorkfest on ESPN is so unwatchable.

The live look-ins to check the weather are about their only useful function.

And whatever clever signs were in the crowd behind the GameDay set, I'll see on twitter or aggregated somewhere.

Where I live, more people are going to be upset about losing ABC 7 with Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune than losing ESPN.

I'm trying to understand the Pat McAfee thing. He's entertaining enough, but I don't understand the tank top thing or what he brings to the table that is so much beyond others who trod the same ground. And my goodness ESPN has invaded Boulder

Last week I had to watch the first quarter of the Texas game on the McAfee broadcast - I guess the college version of the Manningcast.

Half my screen was taken up by McAfee, his guns, his towel and his colleagues. So I’m watching the actual game on a greatly reduced screen. They are standing behind the end zone, which is a terrible place to watch the game. They just kept saying things like “ground and pound”. It was terrible in every sense.

I don’t get the hype either. Does he have loyal devotees like Rogan and Portnoy?

McAfee does have very loyal devotees. But when you're not one of them it's hard to understand. Being in Indianapolis and having seen his media career when it began, I get it a little -- he was a big fish in a small, adoring pond. But as a national guy commanding this much attention? Never would have imagined.
