After reading Jack McCallum's book, I'm betting this was ownership-driven

Not sure. They have been very cheap, to the point of giving away first round picks. So trading 1 year of Marion for 2 of a slightly more expensive Shaq doesn't fit with their normal game plan.

McCallum's book made it clear that by the 05-06 season, the coaches were near the end of their rope trying to stoke Marion's fragile ego. I wonder if he refused an extension or did something else which made them throw in the towel.

Talking about Marion's fragile ego, this is from McCallum's story about the trade.

My thoughts: What the f*ck. As in, why not? This is what makes sports fun, the unexpected. Who isn't curious how this all turns out? I'll definitely check out more games now, seeing as I never watch the NBA. The league must be thrilled about this deal, as it stokes interest across the board. Check out the Suns' web page to see the cheesy, but kind of cool, Shaq splash page.

  6. I think it's a bad trade, but obviously the Suns felt there was no way there were winning a title with this team.

I still think they could have done better than Shaq, but what the hell do I know?

and i think you're the smartest guy on this board.

does that make you brilliant or does it make me brain dead?

  8. Considering I've got "there" instead of "they" in my post, I think it makes you brain dead

Ya know, for a future hall of famer, the "most dominant player of his generation" and a supposed leader, Shaq sure has played for an awful lot of teams.

Thanks for the welcome. To be fair, I'm a longtime lurker.

Saw on SI.com where the NBA is still deciding what to do about the Hawks-Heat game. I'm sure they'll still replay it, but it seems kind of pointless if Shaq's not there. They've already finished it once without Shaq.

As for the trade itself, I'm not a huge NBA guy, but you can count me among those baffled by Phoenix's thinking.

Kareem had a weapon that nobody could block even when he could only jump about 6 inches off the floor. Kareem also could make free throws and hit a 10-12 foot set shot.

Shaq can't get above the floor and doesn't have any offensive skills other than the dunk.
