And didn't a couple of them start the day in Maine? I thought the ones that took off from Boston hopped a commuter flight to Logan so they could go through the more lax security at the smaller airport.

It's interesting how little kids process this stuff. I heard a kid try to explain to her mom at the gas station that the reason it happened was that someone didn't want those runners to cross the finish line and someone else to win. I remember my daughter, who loved the Red Sox at 6, and knowing about the Yankees being the bad guys, looking at me after hearing the reporter on TV that night talk about the plane(s) leaving Boston and hitting the Trade Center towers...well she had picked up that this was New York, home of the Yankees and she suddenly looked up from her toys and said "Daddy did he say those planes were from Boston?" I said "yes" and she looked at me and grinned...."Did they kill any of the Yankees?".....
Well, there were reports of schoolchildren cheering that they were let out of class early the day Kennedy got shot too.

Are the reports that the bombs were in trash cans confirmed?

In New York City, it's standard procedure for big events to remove all trash cans and mailboxes ahead of a big event. (They weld the manhole covers in place too.)

Two notable sections from this Boston Globe column.

And then what's probably the most likely explanation for the NYPost's (and possibly Fox News') leads about the Saudi national.

It's a great read from Kevin Cullen: http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2013/04/15/perfect-day-turns-evil/W7KQHq1NWFqukte3VQ14DJ/story.html?s_campaign=sm_tw

I'm pretty hardened. I'm pretty numb. I'm not sure I'm gonna be able to recover from that first passage for a while.

To be serious, this whole tragedy really sickens me. Patriots' Day was a holiday Bostonians cherished. It's ruined forever because of some asshole/group of asshole. Boston is resilient and will recover, but the victims' families may not.

Why do these things have to happen?

Finally, overnight, I heard from the last Boston-area friend of mine, a longtime running partner of mine who ran two Bostons with me. She was two blocks from the blasts, walking toward the site to meet up with runners who were relatives of her husband, and her e-mail nearly brought me to tears.

I hate it that this happened on a day, at a site, when so many people are so eager to applaud such tremendous personal accomplishment.
