The chase seemed to have the quality of The Blues Brothers ending. There has really been no explanation as to what happened to all the police from Boston chasing them.

I'm sorry but the overall police work to apprehend them was not that great. # 2 was at his college till Thursday afternoon so clearly the FBI did not know who they were at that point.

Toobin was an A-USA, right? I tend to think that he simplifies things for the masses, largely. I haven't noticed too many spots in his work, books or New Yorker pieces, where I say, "Well that doesn't sound right ..."

Yes, if only some amateur gun enthusiast shot live ammo into an ongoing police shootout, in the dark, while there was all sorts of unexploded ordnance about. That would have ended well.

Some shoots from an window, and all the cops turn and fire at the window. Duhhh.

I've worked with the FBI and have known agents professionally and socially for a number of years. I've been to Quantico for limited training for a few days. These guys are professional, solid, well trained with amazing resources. However, they can't order lunch without a formal review, approval from supervisors' supervisors and lawyers in D.C. agreeing to everything, including the number of ketchup packets with each order of fries. Independent thinking, planning on the fly and acting without an overabundance of manpower is not part of the job description. Agents are thoroughly micro managed.
If it takes a metropolitan police department 4 officers to effectuate an arrest on a warrant, the FBI needs 14. Stakeouts, wiretaps, interdiction, any enforcement technique that requires planning, call the FBI. If you absolutely positively need it over night, call the local police.
And in law enforcement circles, ATF is known as After The Fact. All they can do is come in at the end and write reports.

Cops (and others who might argue against Miranda) sometimes seem to forget that the litany is as much for them as it is for the accused. It's designed to be an efficient way to help ensure that an accused is given his or her rights, and that they cannot later argue that they were not.

Its still argued, daily. There are a number of jurisdictions that are moving towards audio or audio visual redecoration of the rights and waiver before allowing statements into evidence. Many jurisdictions have policy statements urging recordings, some mandate it for murder and rape cases.

You wouldn't believe the difference between watching it done and hearing testimony of how it was done.

Based on preliminary written interviews with Dzhokar in his hospital bed, U.S. officials believe the brothers were motivated by their religious views. It has not been clear, however, what those views were.

    lolz

Alex Jones just got a woody from that story. I can't wait to see what conspiracy theory he spins out of being named in that story.
