An old college friend of mine covers the courts here for public radio. He went with the "investigation has a known suspect" story this afternoon. His sources were two federal judges. I mean, what hope is there for reporting if sources like that are just bullshitting off of office gossip?

Were they two federal judges with direct knowledge of the situation? If not, then it's not good enough.

Did he ask the judges how they knew?

Perfectly legit source if one of them is handling the case, but if not, it gets murky fast... and I'll bet both judges heard it from the same original source, meaning he had one source, not two.

Considering that judges sign search warrant, judges should be pretty solid sources. Certainly better than the guy who runs the corner news stand (remember those?).

OT, are you citing "Naked Gun"? If so, bravo!

Excuse the question, but I'm a baseball game. What - if anything - happened at the news conference that was allegedly scheduled for this afternoon?

Can't wait for the discussion about whether the culprit(s) should go to Gitmo or be tried in the US.

Inky, presser was postponed due, it is said, to the earlier bomb threat at the federal courthouse here. It's certainly a plausible reason.

As 1. an American; 2. a runner who just recently completed his first marathon and will never qualify for Boston; 3. someone who likes to keep up on the current events of the world; and 4. a human, please don't get this thread locked.

Leave the political bullshit out of it. If you have an opinion/theory as to what might have happened no matter how based on evidence or silly, that's fine. If you want to bash Westboro or any other group, that's fine. If you want to talk about the stupidity of today's news coverage where being first is more important that being right, that's great. But this has nothing to do with the left or the right, or Washington, or any politician.

Keep the subject to the bombing of the 2013 Boston Marathon. I'd like to discuss this event and not have the thread locked for a second time.

    Uh, Ben Swann,
There has never been a documented case of the FBI being involved in a plot to mass murder anyone.

The idea that anyone would do a "drill" during an event like this with actual explosives and actual casualties defies all logic.

Not sure who is scarier...Ben Swann or the people in the comments section.
