After reading about the bomb details, I started to wonder a bit about who could have planned this. It didn't take me long to suspect a potentially disaffected MIT student. Just a thought, not an accusation. They are local, and the school has a very international student body. I remember that remotely initiated balloon that some of them popped out of the endzone of a Harvard football game around 25 years ago.

The technology in those bombs doesn't require an MIT student, or even a high school student, to build and operate. Heard a very good interview last night on the local Fox affiliate with a TV reporter in Atlanta who'd covered the Olympic Park bombing all the way to Rudolph's conviction. He made the depressing but logical point that the fewer people who were involved in this, the longer it would likely take to find them.

I've never met Charles Krupa and wouldn't recognize him if I did, but his name is one of those I've known for years from working desk and seeing his byline on photos from Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots games. It's safe to say he's going to win a Pulitzer for that photo.

I like the old man on his backside with the police officers looking in three different directions better, but they are many great photos.

Clearly, the bomber was off his target by a couple thousand miles.

Speaking of balloons, I remember seeing one of the videotapes of the (I think) first bombing. As you see the explosion, you see a couple of balloons in the distance fly up to to the sky.

Thought it was a pretty haunting image, even far away.

Organizers of the race say the event will continue in 2014.

  8. FYI:
Five viral stories about BM attacks that aren't true ...

This was a mistake our paper made, as well as a number of other outlets.

Anybody else a little more than annoyed at Atlanta Fox affiliate WAGA-TV(FOX 5) for their imprinting their logo onto the pics of the bombs in such a way that the pics almost look promotional, not informatve. I have a friend who is a former local news anchor who was bothered by this and expressed it on her FB page. I just thought it was extremely distracting and inappropriate. Thoughts.....?

I noticed the balloon also in the video. It looked like a yellow Mickey Mouse balloon.

Really? After Newtown I would have thought they would have been, literally, crucified. But the national media has decided, rightfully, to ignore them for the most part. And the NewsCorp media doesn't want to highlight them or offend their message.
And while their delivery is less than mainstream, their core message is solid American conservative family values. They are Jerry Falwell, Pat Roberston Christians.
