Until the AP starts moving copy, most papers are screwed.

AP does move short, no-byline stories about some of the bigger events. Not covering MMA isn't going to kill newspapers, and covering MMA isn't going to save them.

I think it's popular enough to warrant some coverage, but it, like boxing, is a niche sport, and should be given the amount of space that is generally given to niche sports.

No, sportschick. You missed the memo. NOT running MMA stories IS going to kill this dying industry.

Can I blame the drugs? :D

  5. OK, then, even if we accept your parameters, if something's a big deal for 3-4 years, and is continuing to grow bigger in year four, which it is, then it is beyond the point of being a fad.

I don't see where anyone has said that in this thread. I actually agree with the post above yours in regards to coverage. And while it may too much to expect a beat in papers, if all of the major websites are devoting writers and coverage to it, don't people think it's at least worth having some coverage if you can manage it? I also do agree though with whoever said that most fans are getting their info online. Of course, I've heard somewhere that newspapers are available on the interwebs now.

I think if you have a lot of "big" MMA fighters in your area you're missing a lot of chances for good features. For all the complaining that was just going on around this board about access and how every middle reliever has a publicist most of these guys are very accessible and don't give the cliched media schooled answers.

Boobie, Boobie, Boobie. (Last time I got to say that was at Club Juana outside Orlando ...) :)

I'll admit to doing some skimming. Rest of my post stands.

After the clusterfuck the CBS show was, I wouldn't go assuming bigger things just yet. And with the Net being a younger people's place, and with unlimited news hole, darn straight they should have MMA reporters

Viewers didn't think it was such a "clusterfuck."
Not saying I have an opinion one way or another, just looking at numbers...

Comparing it with repeats of Case/Trace....no shit. And ratings reflect curiousity, trying out something new. The reviews of the actual show are mostly negative.

The true test will be how the ratings are doing by the fifth or sixth Saturday of showing em.

    My 2 cents:

Upon entering a favorite place of mine where I like to visit with good people and have a good drink, there was some UFC thing on all the televisions in the entire place. I couldn't help but to throw up in my mouth a little. We found a table in the corner, and I faced the wall and tried my best to throw back a few beers fast in an effort to down out the sounds around me. When the final fight was over I clapped a little, knowing that something else would be on the televisions soon.

So any article at all placed anywhere at all in any of the papers/magazines I read will be immediately skipped over.

Maybe it was only 1 cent, but that's my opinion.
