And then you look at what was offered Americans on the mainstream nets this weekend: "Friday Night Fights" on the WWL with a pair of rising stars (and did anyone notice how far promoters pushed the definition of super middleweight in the Shawn Estrada-Terrance Woods fight? and on Saturday, fighters on the next level on Showtime.

This very much looks like a photo of David Haye bottling Derek Chisora or at least hitting Derek Chisora while holding a bottle in his hand.

That Klitschko didn't land a blow that good in twelve rounds of trying speaks volumes.

I get your point but I would submit that more people in Bumblefuck, Iowa would know who Man U is before they could tell you who any of the heavyweight champs are.

And wasn't Haye another guy who left his fight at the weigh in?

I'm pretty sure the Bumblefuck, Iowa, resident is more likely to know the name "Klitschko" than to be able to name any player (almost certainly Wayne Rooney) for Manchester United. And I would guarantee that the Bumblefuckian would be able to name more active boxers -- start with Mayweather and Pacquiao -- than English Premier League players.

You start with Mayweather and Pacquiao ... and damn near finish with them.

Don't be too sure he doesn't know more EPL players.

I doubt there are many Americans who know Robin Van Persie or John Terry or Patrice Evra or David Silva but not Wladimir Klitschko or Vitali Klitschko or Bernard Hopkins or Shane Mosley.

I'll add Andre Ward to the "unknown" list as well.

The German police have released Chisora, but he is facing a possible charge of simple assault.

The average resident of Bumblefuck, Iowa (20 minutes from Lake Tahoe, Iowa) could, with a reasonable cable package, watch a dozen Premier League matches on a given weekend. Even with a basic cable package, he'll likely be able to watch an ESPN match plus a match on FSN (plus over-the-air if Fox has a match). Meanwhile, without having a cable channel that is probably not offered on any of his cable packages, there was no way for him to watch the heavyweight title fight.

Boxing's an individual sport, though. And many people who haven't seen either fight know all about the Mayweather-Pacquiao non-feud. That was my only contention -- that individual boxers still have some fame, more than EPL players.
