A terrible, crushing day. My thoughts go out to everyone at the Rocky Mountain News, and I hope you will be able to recover from this. I began my career at a Scripps paper in Stuart, Fla. ("It's Always Better In The Afternoon" was one of our slogans until we went mornings in 1984). Now here in Tampa, in a two-paper market, we go from walking on eggshells to walking VERY gingerly on eggshells. Competition between the newspapers in the Tampa Bay area makes both papers better, and South Florida's big three papers wage some of most competitive battles around. Makes for better journalism; take a newspaper out of the mix in either market, and it will be a disastrous and shameful day. It still might happen, but I hope we (and other cities) won't have to attend a meeting like those folks in Denver did.

    Good luck, guys.

Good gosh. As if winning an APSE award wasn't enough of a kick in the balls ...

Jesus, yeah, I forgot about that.

And the Colorado Press Association and Colorado Associated Press (CAPER) awards ceremonies are Friday and Saturday night, respectively.

  5. Thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved at the RMN. This is heart-shattering.

Here's our news-side cartoonist's finale one. He printed out copies for everyone as well. I'll post Drew Litton's when we get it. (My thanks to IJAG for the help)

What happened with the Rocky's beat writers on the road (for instance, the Avalanche played in New Jersey Thursday night)?

Rick Sadowski is in New Jersey, covering the game tonight.

  9. Somebody buy him several dozen drinks after the game.

This may have been noted already -- too lazy to scroll through all 10 pages -- but the RMN story announcing its own death dutifully includes a link to subscribe.

I work in media, but television, not newspaper. I'm far away in Richmond, VA, but I grew up in Denver and I read the RMN online everyday the past few years. I can't believe I won't be able to access it anymore. It's unreal to me. This is all I have thought about all day. We've had an unbelievable amount of layoffs at my station in the past few months. So scary. So, tonight, I emailed my friends in the local media market and supplied them with the link to the RMN website. Just looking at that webpage was devastating. We met this evening. We talked about the state of local news. Here and everywhere else. And we are so sad. We toasted to the RMN more than a few times. And we have no idea what lies ahead...but we are so worried. Our thoughts and spoken words all went to the Rocky Mountain News staff and families tonight. You guys were really, really good. Best of luck is all I know to say. This is bullshit is what I want to say. Best to all...

That is odd to have the Devils, the former Colorado Rockies, beating the Avalanche as the final hockey story printed in the RMN.

Mile High, I met you at the Rockies' World Series Game 3 and I am hoping for the best for you and yours.

I also have another good friend at the RMN who has just gone home to a situation where he and his wife both do not have jobs and kids who are ages 3 (next month) and seven months.

I am saddened by this news and what's worse? The newspaper bleeding isn't stopping any time soon.
