A toast . . . to the Rocky Mountain News, and the men and women there who dedicated themselves to the great passion that is daily journalism.

And to those who would lead this grand lady to her death, and their fellow robber-barons who would do the same at their own outlets, with the only goal of filling their personal coffers:

    Get to know this map.

  2. God bless to all at the RMN. Best of luck in your future endeavors, and I pray that you find something fast, and something that is as fulfilling as your time at the Rocky.

When I get home, a toast of Shiner Bock to all of you.

    Cheers.

I sorta can. But at least we got a month or so to prepare for the end, not 13 hours.

Hope y'all cherish the last moments, drink the fuck out of yourselves after deadline and take the memories of being the last link in a 150-year chain to the end.

I'm tipping one to you now, RMN folks.

You remained above the fray right to the end. We could all learn a lesson from you.

I'm going to grab a Harp out of the fridge right now. Slainte!

And a couple more Irish toasts for all the RMN crew:

May those who love us love us.
And those that don’t love us,
    May God turn their hearts.
And if He doesn’t turn their hearts,
    May He turn their ankles,
So we’ll know them by their limping.
    ----------------------------------------------

Here’s to a fellow who smiles
When life runs along like a song.
And here’s to the lad who can smile
    When everything goes dead wrong.
    --------------------------------------------

    Always remember to forget
The things that made you sad.
    But never forget to remember
The things that made you glad.
    -----------------------------------------
    Bottoms up or bottoms down,
Either way no one will frown.

    Cheers.

    We chased one page.

    My God. I can't believe it. I'm crushed. I'm overwhelmed. I'm .... wow.

It's really happening. We're going away. And after packing up tomorrow, I won't be coming into a newsroom again with a job in who knows when.

I just had about 10 people come down here and we clapped down for me to send the last page to pre-press. It was hard. It was emotional. But I managed to make some light of it. ("I can't do it. Noooooooo. Don't make me do it.")

I'm spent. What a day. I've never been through anything like that. And I hope to never do it again.

And the bond that I've formed on here, the notes that I received, the heart-felt appreciation and thoughts and wishes, again, I cannot express how much they mean to me. To each and every one of you, thank you so much.

We're off to drink many Fat Tires now. There will be laughs. And tears. But also a great bond with great people. Hard-working people. Professionals, each and every one of them.

Oh, wait, what's this ELWAY-OBIT doing on the wires? (Hi IJAG.)

    And with that ...

For the Rocky Mountain News ...

MH, if you're still on, tell me where you're going drinking. I want to call that bar and tell them they need to find a way to stay open later. Let you guys vent properly, share the great stories, figure out who the designated drivers are, etc., etc.

Best wishes to you and the others at the RMN.

After what has been a long and emotional day, please know that there will be many people drinking in your honor tonight/this morning.

First, the gym. Then, a nice Sam Adams.

BTW, Fat Tire kicks ass. But I stand by Harp for tonight. We all raise a toast to the RMN crew.

You and the rest of the staff have brought honor to an industry that doesn't deserve it today.

From a complete scrub like me who has never and will never sniff a paper like the RMN, thanks. A tip of the cap and of this iced tea to you.

I haven't gone through all 15 pages of posts yet, but I'm making my way through. And without having finished yet, I still nominate this for thread of the year.
