Why are they freaking out? It seems like there would be other things for newspaper folks to freak out about other than adding someone of quality to the staff.

Because they know they're going to make up for the salary adds by making more cuts. Cuts were coming to The Post soon anyway, this just means there will be even more.

As a reader of a one-columnist metro, I'm plenty jealous of a five-voice section. Of course there's also no way that can last.

Right. The fact that only three columnist were listed in the story about the hires was lost on nobody.

Is his salary going to make that much of a difference? I mean, with what I'm reading about things over there, aren't any cuts going to come with a big sword, not a kitchen knife? I guess what I'm saying is, when it happens, is this hire really going to affect anyone negatively? When the hammer drops, it's going to drop hard and heavy.

Not surprising, but they're gouging. I just called to have a copy shipped to me, and it's $7.

Pisses me off, but I want to hold the product that so many people so bravely put out. Thank you, MH, and thanks to all of your cowork...er, family.

To hire Krieger, I would guess that would mean that unless they cut someone like Armstrong or Frei (doubtful) at least two staffers will have to be cut.

I was poking around on the Web site to try and order a commemorative copy today (albeit not poking very hard). I guess I'll call.

Much as $7 is rather gouging and I hate the idea that the money is going to the company that put the Rocky under. I want a copy of the thing to hang onto.

Yeah, I looked around, then just called "delivery, outside Colorado" and they took my info. Have a credit card ready.

Ringolsby told a story (this will out me to a few people) of how a Dallas Times-Herald reporter learned of its closing. Seems the announcement was made while sports world was at an event and a number of people came up to the reporter to offer their condolences. The T-H reporter had no idea what they were talking about because he'd been in transit and then chasing a story. One of the other well-wishers told him, "Uh, you should call your office."

He called and learned that effective immediately, he no longer had a job. Point being, no one at the T-H bothered to tell him personally.

Tracy, feel free to correct me if I mis-heard it.

A nice tribute from a blog - it's formerly firegeorgekarl.com. The guy who runs it is good friends with several reporters at RMN and talks about what's lost, in particular for guys like him who depend on journalists.

I heard a similar story about The National.
