Mizzougrad, that info was part of the recent union negotiations including paycuts for all employees there from 6-8 percent among other considerations.

MileHigh, sorry to hear for the loss there. To RMN alum, James family and friends, our deepest sympathy. It truly does put life in perspective.

I seem to recall from early in the thread that the Rocky Mountain News name and internet domain would be up for sale. Are these guys trying to buy it?

What awful news about James. RIP.

I was talking to a friend of mine who's a high school student in Ohio on AIM last night. He's a Broncos fan, so he read both The Denver Post and The Rocky Mountain News to keep up with his team.

I would say "even" he said The Denver Post sucked compared to The Rocky, but that would be an insult to a very smart young man. If a high school student from another part of the country made the same observation many of us who have years of journalism experience did, what does that say about the state of our industry?

It's depressing to read that tomorrow will bring the last print edition of The Seattle Post-Intelligencer rolling off the presses. Some part of us all dies a little bit when something like that happens. Just one more chip off an already broken heart (sorry for the Stevie Nicks lyric there; it felt appropriate).

These two comments underneath that first link:

Ok, I was a big fan of the RMN, and was very sad that it shut down. But, you’re going to have to convince me that for even as little as $5/mo you can deliver better news than I can get from a bazillion other sources on the internet for free.

    Sorry, didn’t finish…
Anyway, I’m not saying I’m against it, especially at that price. I guess I’m just saying I’m skeptical and prefer to wait and see what it’s like before I subscribe.

And this one underneath the YouTube video:

I'm not impressed--and slack on the inspiration. Sounds like more of what we get for free on in any other MSM venue. I applaud these guys for at least trying, but $5 a month for more of the same stuff? No.
    .
.. concern me and bring up some of what we all have discussed before on this board, which is unless everyone goes all in on the pay-for-content idea it's going to make it very tough for operations like this one to succeed.

I hope I'm wrong, especially for you Mile High and the other ex-RMNers giving this a go. I really do.

The most immediate question, I suppose, is whether they will 50,000 pledges by April 23.

Will anyone here subscribe for $5 a month?

I would if I thought it would be the last one.

Here's a couple of ways to look at it...

$5 is about one Starbucks a month.

$5 is buying the Denver Post only on Sundays

$5 is most of what you would pay for a newsstand copy of ESPN:The Magazine or Sports Illustrated.

If you got better coverage than in the Denver Post, I would think it would be worth it if you are a fan of the Denver sports teams.

    Gold,

No argument here as far as what I would do. Of course I'd be willing to subscribe, but my fear is that what I posted higher up with those reader comments could represent the masses more than us.
