I have to assume you're talking about the Yuengling traditional lager. TONS of beers taste similar, Ray. There's really nothing special about it. It's a basic upscale macro lager. Marginally better than what you'll get from Budweiser, Miller, etc., not as good, complex or flavorful as any good micro.

Its style is an amber lager. If you can find Brooklyn Lager anywhere, that's a solid one. The AleSmith Evil Dead Red would be good for you. Stone Levitation Ale. Southern Tier Big Red. Bell's Amber Ale is also pretty good.

Arbor Brewing Co's Brasserie Blonde Belgian Ale (Ann Arbor, Mich.)
Three Floyd's Robert the Bruce Scottish Ale (Munster, Ind.)
Keweenaw Brewing's Widowmaker Black Ale (Houghton, Mich.)
    Black Label
Anything by Sand Creek (Black River Falls, Wisc.)
    Bell's Hopslam
    Sam Adams Cherry Wheat
My buddy Randy's double IPA that he brewed and bottled in his kitchen is damn fine also! When he gets $40K to start his microbrewery...lookout world!

I don't always drink beer, but when I do...

I'll second the Sam Cherry Wheat among my faves.

My top beer, though, is probably Lavaman Red Ale from the Kona Brewing Co. Their Longboard Lager is probably 1b.

Little note for those of us trying to introduce women to beer ... this is a pretty good transition beer for those who are used to wine coolers and such. If you can manage to find it, I also highly recommend the Founders Cerise for this purpose. It's fantastic.

Had the Quelque Chose recently. That will knock you on your behind.

From Unibroue, yeah. Good beer. Only comes in the bomber if you get it at the store. Around 8% abv, if I remember correctly. And yes, that would be a decent transition beer as well.

Want a beer that'll really knock you on your ass? Find a Dogfish Head Worldwide Stout. I think it's 19% abv. That's about as high as you can go before it starts being overwhelming.

I just bought a bottle of that a few days ago. It's pretty good! It's really pink, which is a little offsetting, but it had a nice tart cherry taste (not like the cloying, medicinal cherry of Sam Adams).

Lambics are a really good transition beer for non-traditional beer drinkers. But they tend to be pricey and don't have much alcohol kick.

I enjoy a squeeze of lime in my Tecate and even Sierra Nevada, but I'm not crazy about beers that are brewed with fruit. You lose the crispness of the fruit.
I'm not opposed to the occassional lambic or kriek, but I can't have more than one or two.

    Damn straight.

    My top five:
    1. Boulevard Wheat
    2. Shiner Bock
    3. Negra Modelo
    4. Flying Dog Old Scratch
    5. Dos XX

There are a lot of really, really bad beers on some lists in this thread. PBR? Schlitz? Old Milwaukee? Wow.

Interesting side note, one of my uncles is buried with a special edition bottle of Lone Star. Pretty sweet.

Yes. Good call, MM. That's exactly right. It pours a sort of pinkish red and looks like a sparkling wine. Maybe even a champagne. You think it's going to be really sweet and fruity. You get that fruit on the nose and when it first hits your tongue, but it tastes and has the mouthfeel of a beer more on the finish. It's quite good.

I'm just happy that Founders is making a little headway into Virginia. I got singles of the Cerise (great) and the regular breakfast stout (not bad, but a little too much coffee and not enough stout). The place that sells the KBS for $13/bottle is a bar, so I'm hoping I can get it at a beer place or Whole Foods soon. And I really really really want to take a crack at that Canadian Breakfast Stout.
