Favorite beer

  1. Lately, I've become a big fan of Lost Coast Brewery in Calif. If you like Blue Moon, you would probably like either their Great White or Tangerine Wheat. Trader Joe's sells Lost Coast beer if you want to give it a try.

Goose Island makes some tremendous beers. The retail outlet & the brew pub mentioned in the article are across the street from each other and just a short walk from here.

Might have to go check it out:

Just had a Founders Backwoods Bastard last night. Wow, does that pack a wallop, but it is outstanding. It's aged in bourbon barrells, so it has that bourbon kind of taste with a good beer finish. It's tremendous.

Also very, very good is the Founders Breakfast Stout. If you love coffee and you love beer, this is the brew for you.

Bourbon County Stout with about two years on it is one of the best beers around. Fresh, it's so hot (alcohol-wise) that (to me) it's almost undrinkable.

Fresh Bourbon County Coffee Stout, which was out earlier this year, was bomb.com. Hoping the newly released Bourbon County Vanilla Stout makes an appearance on our local shelves, since it came and went lickety-split in Chicagoland in about a four-day period.

Would like to try the Rare, but not thrilled about spending $45-50 for one 22oz bottle. And I sure as hell am not standing in the cold waiting in line to do so (not that I haven't done that for other recent beer releases...).

Made my first-ever foray to Cleveland in October and Great Lakes had been recommended. A Burning River and a Commodore Perry, and they were terrific. Only negative was they were out of the brat and pierogi.

Biggest regret for Mrs Fly and I thusfar is not making a weekend to go to Cleveland and GLBC. [makesnoteoncalendar]

That, and a stop at Melt...

Had the Backwoods Bastard on tap at a little, um, "secret" beer bar 'round these parts a couple of weeks ago. It's excellent. Picked up some at the store and intend on cellaring a couple of them. Beers aged in bourbon barrels like that typically age very well.

And yes, the Breakfast Stout is good, but you should really try to find the Kentucky Breakfast Stout. By pretty much all accounts, it's even better. Founders makes a damn fine beer. Good call on getting into some of their stuff, mjp.

I have a bottle of Chimay Red, I've had it for a few years. Is it drinkable?

I never heard of it and my cousin brought a bottle over one night. I put it aside and never thought about it again. Ata restuarant about a year ago it was on the beer list and I ordered it and loved it. I just found my bottle on the floor of a closet, making room for tomorrow. If it's drinkable, it's a great thanksgiving beer.

How warm was the closet floor? As long as it wasn't exposed to light or too much heat it should be ok. Dubbels can withstand some aging.

Anyone ever have one of the Trader Joes Vintage Ales? They are pretty good and do a little bit better with age.
