Rain man. Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise in the telephone booth. Dustin Hoffman farts. I believe he actually did it and the two ad-libbed the lines. Classic and funny.

    Some horror movies:

"Halloween": Linda, laying in bed, doing her nails while waiting for boyfriend Bob to bring her a beer. Door opens, slowly, creaking. Wearing a bedsheet and Bob's glasses is one Michael Myers. Linda doesn't know it. No music. Absolutely chilling. Scariest fucking movie ever.

"The Shining": Jack busting the door, sticking his face through the opening, and shouting, "Here's Johnny!"

"Carrie": Mom stabs Carrie, Carrie falls down the stairs, and Mom comes down, holding the knife and makes the sign of the cross. Good gawd, that scene gives me chills still.

"House on Haunted Hill": When the one girl is down in the abandoned operating room of the psych hospital, and she hears screaming, but doesn't see anything. She looks into her video camera, where she sees the doctor and nurse ghosts torturing a patient. She looks away from the camera, sees nothing, then back at the camera, where the ghosts slowly turn away from the torture to look at her, and then they kill her.

Scary moment that gives me chills.

    Some favorites from my favorites:

-- Tiny Dancer scene in Almost Famous. Bonus points to the "I am not sweet... I am the enemy" speech.
-- Every scence with Jon Lovitz in A League of Their Own
-- The football in the gym scenes in Necessary Roughness... "Popke, show him the arm". (Popke flexes). "Throw the damn ball, genius." And then when an errant pass clangs into the basket. "How about that, he sucks at two sports."
-- Tim the Enchanter/Holy Hand Grenade in Holy Grail. The reading from the Book of Armaments always kills me, so to speak.
-- Any Given Sunday isn't a favorite, but the Pachino "Inches" speech is epic.
-- Rudy, when he gets the sack and Favreau screams "Who's the wild man now?"
-- Good Morning Vietnam, where Forest Whitaker convinces Robin Williams to stay by showing him what he means to the troops.
-- O Brother Where Art Thou... scene where they're talking about how they'll spend the treasure while Tommy Johnson plays the mournful, bluesy song in the back ground. Also love the restaurant scene with Pappy and his advisors. "Pappy's just making a point." "SHADDUP!"

Spider-Man, when Peter is first discovering his powers, accidentally hits Flash with a tray of food and then kicks his butt. I really love the way they used slow motion to try to demonstrate how his new perceptions work. It was a nice mix of humor, exposition and geek wish fulfillment.

Some 2nds for those previously mentioned.

Deer Hunter russian roulette scene. Fantastic tension.

Apollo 13 landing scene. A number of great moments: Hanks 'It's been a privilege flying with you', Mission Control erupting, but mostly Harris fighting back tears and a celebration of relief that they're saved.

Major League: Sheen enters from the bullpen and X unleashes "Wild Thing".

    And a couple that haven't:

Psycho: the shower scene. How did Janet Leigh keep from blinking that long?

Trading Places: the pep talk/advice from Ackroyd as they're about to enter the trading exchange that ends with Murphy going 'we're gonna kill those m-fers'

Great stuff already. Here are some more...

Good Will Hunting: The scene where Will tells the Minnie Driver character that he doesn't love her. Powerful scene all the way around.

Empire Strikes Back: Darth/Luke lightsaber battle and the mother of all surprises.

Precious: When she brings her baby home and the ensuing mother/daughter fight.

Malcolm X: The scene right before his assassination where he's "floating" through the streets and the little old lady says that she's going to "pray" for him.

Star Trek (new version): The early scene in Iowa where Kirk is a boy and driving the stolen car.

    Up: The opening "marriage" montage

Aliens: The first battle scene where the marines are slaughtered, all captured on headset cameras. Also, the final Ripley/mother alien battle.

3:10 to Yuma: Scene where Dan Evans reveals to Ben Wade the true story about his limp leg as he's trying to hunt him down.
