    My man, that would be a heavy lift for the three spirits, The Great Pumpkin, and Mr. Hankey. The hate there is visceral and unrelenting.

    O Come O Come Emmanuel gets buried sometimes in overproduction or a too-fast tempo. Then you hear a stripped-down version and realize in a parallel universe this could have become gut bucket blues or high lonesome country. Found this version in 2020 when desperation at Christmas time became all too real.

    Don't think anyone else ever did this song, but once Rufus Thomas did it, no one needed to do it. The break in the middle is to die for.
