Sporting News nailed it:"Pathetic-10"UC Davis would have played better at Maryland yesterday.
I'm glad I didn't have money on Cal.

I'm not allowed to bet it, but I love handicapping the games, and I would have had money on Cal. The two touchdown spread made it so there were a few games I liked better, but I would have said that game was a good bet. I did say it. Other than the fact that this was Cal, the Pac-10, and these teams are so inconsistent (I am learning my lesson), that whole thing didn't add up in anything but bizarro world--until it actually happened and then it made perfect sense. Cal handles a respectable Michigan State team. Then they hang an absolute beating on Washington State. Maryland barely handled Delaware and got played tough by Middle Tennessee State. I *still* think Maryland is a mediocre team.

The reason it makes sense now is what a friend who played in the ACC, and follows it closely still as a commentator, told me right before that game and has told me before. Maryland always plays up to the competition. He thought that was a game you stay away from. He was right. That doesn't fully explain it, because Maryland didn't just play up to the competition. They were the better team. With the ACC the way it is, Maryland could actually do some serious winning through its conference schedule. I never would have thought that three weeks ago.

It's not that I thought Maryland was totally sorry, but you looked at the ACC before the season and you saw Clemson running away with it, perhaps Virginia Tech and Wake being decent and then everyone else battling for the scraps. At least that was the way I saw it.

Clemson has been a choking dog for years. Ask the other ACC folks on the board.

Wake Forest might FINALLY be given credit for being a really good program. The same people who keep building up the same programs, regardless of the experience on the field or anything else, have been trying to bury Wake Forest. And they're not going away.

Virginia Tech will probably win 8-9 games on defense and exceptional special teams, partly because the rest of the Atlantic Coast Conference isn't very good. Maryland can be serious players if the QB can show some consistency. Headbutt has been around here long enough that his word works for me ...

Interesting point brought up last night. Wisconsin offered to bring B10 refs to Fresno this year and let Fresno have WAC refs in Madison next year and was shot down.

Polls are out. Great job coaches, keeping Arizona State in the poll at 24. And Vandy is getting the shaft, particularly in the coaches poll. Getting votes to put them at 35th, and apparently Connecticut has been more impressive to the coaches. Crackerjack job guys.

Oh and apparently after last night, Wisconsin is currently the 8th best team in the country.

Della, give credit to Fresno State. It was there. This was their national title game. Wisconsin was lucky -- and good -- to win it.

And Arizona State still in the top 25? What bizarro world is this?

That's a strong team in the Valley. They may not be done yet.

I don't doubt that Fresno State is a pretty good team. I don't see the logic in the entireity of the poll if the 8th best team barely wins at the No. 25/26 team based on the voting. Shouldn't Fresno then be higher? How can BYU by 11 this week? UCLA didn't a single vote, but Tennessee can still be considered a top 35 team? What Penn State's done so far that doesn't make them not even close to the top 10? Auburn wins 3-2 but doesn't drop in the coaches poll?

I just don't get it sometimes.

Fresno actually should have been higher. They are that good. But a fledgling team (i.e. not Boise State, which already had to fight that battle) out of the WAC is always going to be ranked too low until they get to 10-0.
