But wait, Michigan will be in the national championship game in five years.

    Desmond says so.

There were many years Michigan and Ohio State were the only ones with talent in the Big 10.

I don't have the number, but how many years did the USC-UCLA winner determine the Rose Bowl participant?

It still has implications this year. If OSU lost, they'd be completely out of the Big Ten championship picture.

Nothing like letting emotion get in the way of making a long-term coaching decision.

Purdue 31, Indiana 0. Midway through the second quarter.

IU football: Back in the septic tank.

Red Sox-Yankees is a decent rivalry, but I don't really believe a pro sports rivalry could come close to a college one. Just because A-Rod got punched one time, doesn't mean shit. The Rays have fought with the Red Sox and Yankees just as much or more than they've fought with each other since 2004.

It could still have implications if both teams were tied for last place, going to 10th. Doesn't mean it's worth watching, though.

Would it kill Michigan to throw a slant route today?

This years tOSU-Michigan game is a true test of the relevence of the rivalry. For the last five years, one or both teams has been playing for something pretty big in this game, usually a national championship. Now it's just another game. The Buckeyes can go to the Rose Bowl, but MSU has to beat Penn State, so it's not quite win and you're in. Meanwhile, Michigan is having its worse season ever. To them beating tOSU makes their season -- but their coach isn't getting the troops fired up. He's spent the week understating the rivalry, blaming Lloyd Carr for leaving the cupboard bare, and telling fans to get a life.

On the field, though, it seems to mean as much to the players as ever. Tense first quarter. Pryor saved the day by forcing Michigan's defender out of bounds after the INT. A return to the house to start the game could have become a storied play in this rivalry. Jenkins body-slammed some Michigan dude and the refs just warned them both. The refs know what's up. Everyone on both sides jawing face-to-face on the field pregame with all the coaches in the middle. The few Michigan fans in attendance screaming and yelling their lungs out when things looked good for UM after the INT.

Plenty of energy on the field, even if there hasn't been a lot of excitement leading up to this game, and it looks like it's going the way everyone expected.

Think about the words: "In all of SPORT." Not all of THE sport. ALL OF SPORT.

In college football, some of course would argue Auburn-Alabama. Texas-Oklahoma? USC-Notre Dame?

I don't think anything in college hoops comes close, although Duke-North Carolina and Indiana-Kentucky might disagree.

But anyway . . "All of Sport" is a wide, wide, world. How about Germany-England in international soccer?

"It's decided the Big Ten!!!!!!" Wow. It's decided the champion in an American college football conference in the Midwest? Stop the worldwide fucking presses.

A dumb statement, much more hype that reality. No matter what the fanboys are saying here.

    Uh . . . 2005?

Before that, it was quite a while, sure. Probably 1988 if you want to pick nits.
