This was not a good weekend for the Big 12 South. Sad day.

The ball didn't go 10 yards. The Oklahoma guy reached back and brought it the final yard. That said, darn good try. And yeah, Missouri run-blocked down the stretch in a way I hadn't seen since the Cotton Bowl against Arkansas. And the defense all of a sudden pass rushed like madmen and started to figure out OU's routes. And both two-point attempts were idiotic beyond belief.

I got tired of Musberger talking about "the third No. 1 to go down in 3 weeks!" Not true. BCS rankings didn't exist until this week. The others were No. 1 in AP. Oregon is No. 1 in AP.

But the main thing is , ABC/ESPN, both owned by same company, can't have it both ways. On Thursday on ESPN it was "No. 1 Oregon" (AP) and tonight it was "No. 1 Okla" (BCS). TV picks which ranking they want to hype the importance of a game.

BTW, that James Franklin guy that scored the last Missouri touchdown is a stud who is almost certain to be the starter next year, assuming Gabbert will enter the draft.

OK, now that I'm done with the world of volleyball district playoffs ...

Iowa screwed up with burning the timeout late, but that's not what lost it for the Hawkeyes.

Their defense just isn't as good as last season -- ESPECIALLY against the pass. I think they miss Pat Angerer a lot, and I believe Jeremiah Hunter missed the second half today due to injury. So Iowa is pretty thin at linebacker.

As much as it pained me to watch the closing seconds before bolting out the door today, the Hawkeyes could still win out. The rest of the Big 10 (and quite a few other teams in BCS leagues) will be rooting for them next week. Won't mean a thing if they don't tighten up the D, though.

Not sure if I missed this, but a nice gesture by Pitt students and the athletic department in support of Eric LeGrand, the Rutgers lineman who was paralyzed from the neck down last week.

Just to make sure- We do remember that Bob Stoops is a horrible in-game coach, right? This isn't a new thing, right?

The Louisville-UConn game was inconsequential for anyone not in Storrs or Louisville, but watch out for Charlie Strong and the Cardinals over the next few years. He has taken a team that looked absolutely lost at times in the opening day loss to Kentucky and morphed it into a pretty solid team.

UofL may slide backward a little next year, as most of the talent is in the senior class, but Strong is rotating a lot of freshmen and sophomores in there and getting them some valuable playing time.

It'll be a few years, but given the ineptitude of the Big East, it shouldn't be too long before Louisville is back in the hunt in that league.

I guess Texas, UConn and Pitt would be the big disappointments, and Missouri, Oklahoma State and Michigan State the big surprises

Oh, and Florida as a disappointment, too

All of that is nice - but every year I hear about how great of a coach Kirk Ferentz is and every time I watch Iowa I am underwhelmed by what I see - he just looks to me like a prototypical, ultra-conservative 3-yards-and-a cloud-of-dust, NFL minded coach who struggles with clock management and down and distance.

For my money he is the most overrated coach in America.

As is the case with the Gators this year . . . they're not that friggin' good.
