It seems to me that USC doesn't have any explosion on offense. Unlike last year or the Palmer/Leinart/Bush era, the Trojans are more methodical; they don't have--or seemingly can't--the capability to put forty, fifty, sixty, seventy points.

They beat a 3-4 Akron team 20-2, after leading only 3-2 at halftime. Looks like a No. 1 team to me.

I submitted my Top 25 last night. It reflects quality victories, something I believe teams should have at this point of the season. And right now, there's not much of a difference in resume among Ohio State, Boston College and Kansas.

All I know is that some people aren't going to like my top 25 ballot this week based on what I've seen on the thread since yesterday.

And all I know is that in the Battle for Top 25 recognition, neither UVa or UConn make the poll after that game. That result was purely awful.

How can you justify LSU and Cal in the top 4?
Cal to a 4-3 Beavers squad and well, we all know what happened in Lexington yesterday.

    Thinking ahead...

I guess we have a Top 25 when the regular season ends and the final rankings after the bowls, yes?

I think there's an attitude of "South Florida just can't be that good," the results on the field notwithstanding.

I put 'em at No. 6.
And for the record, my poll has been submitted so I won't be holding none o' ya'll this week. :)

Seems like there's always a team like that every year ... Boise State.

This South Florida phenomenom has me wondering: has its sudden surge forced newspapers in the state to cover them differently? Obviously Tampa and St. Pete have beat guys, but does Orlando pay them more attention than they had planned? The South Florida Troika and Jacksonville? That pirate newspaper produced on a old battleship 100 miles off the Florida west coast?

Which is the eternal chicken-egg about polls:

Are we voting based on the results on the field? Or are we trying to rank the teams we think are the 25 best in the nation?

One criteria can be so very different from the other. I still think Florida is among the top 5 teams in the nation -- but the Gators have two losses, so based on this year's results, they don't belong anywhere near the top 5. ... Or do they, because their two losses are both to teams I think are in the T25 (including the former No. 1)?

I'd like to think my vote is 60 percent "rank the best teams" and 40 percent "results on the field." But I might be wrong about ... my vote. Yeah.

I work at none of those papers you mentioned, but I'm at a paper pretty close to Tampa, and our coverage has increased tenfold in the last few weeks.
