Wow, someone else who went to a USFL game before an NFL game. I saw the Chicago Blitz beat the Birmingham Stallions at Soldier Field. Believe I was 11. I was out of high school before I saw my first NFL game, Seahawks at Bears, 1990 season opener. It was the first and only game in which Seattle ran the run-and-shoot. It was scrapped after the 17-0 loss. That night also marked my first night drinking in a bar as an adult. I was 18, but looked 14. I even played a game of pool with the owner. I have no idea how I didn't get kicked out.

First baseball game: No idea. Cubs vs. somebody during the late '70s. I went to so many when my dad worked as a beer vendor that I can't remember which was the first.

First White Sox game: Not sure who they played, but I know it was Aug. 3, 1986, because it was the same day the defending champion Bears played in the American Bowl in London. I also remember it was the MLB debut of Russ Mormon.

First video I saw on MTV: "Abracadabra," which I think somebody else already mentioned.

First car: 1978 Mazda GLC 4-door hatchback. Went 0-to-60 in about a year. Top speed 81 mph, downhill, in the tailwind of a truck. But I beat the thing to hell and it kept coming back for more, and when I drove it nicely, I could squeeze 40 mpg out of it on the highway.

First major-league ballgame: July 25, 1977. Cardinals 9, Reds 8 at Busch Stadium.

First album purchased: "First Under the Wire" by the Little River Band, in 1979. The Little River Band also played the first concert I paid to attend, in 1984.

First beer: Bud Light in a pony bottle, in 1985. I was 17. I was in the back seat of a '78 Trans Am being driven home from the local movie theater to get my spare car key because I had locked mine in the car. I didn't know the guys in the front seat. But they were cool. They had the beer stashed in a little bathroom trash can with ice in it covered by a towel. I can say without reservation that I liked the first beer I drank, so I treated myself to a second.

First byline: Coverage of a high school wrestling tournament, 26 years ago today, as it turns out. It was also the first wrestling tournament I had ever seen.

First 1A story: A year and a half later, the death of a local football player.

First funeral: A high-school classmate who was killed in a tornado my freshman year.

First song I heard as a licensed driver: "Hard For Me to Say I'm Sorry," by Chicago.

First time across a state line: At age 13, to go five minutes into a neighboring state. I've made up for it since then, having lived in four different states. I've now been to 40 states, six Canadian provinces, and four other countries.

First legal drink: A shot of Everclear at midnight on my 21st birthday. I can still feel the burn.

The first time I puked from booze was also the last time.
Didn't like the feeling of puking my guts out all night.
Also discovered a year or two later that I'm a lousy drunk. I get depressed, angry and tired if I have too much to drink.
I don't like beer and if I do drink my limit is two screwdrivers over a 5 or 6 hour period.
