    Can't spell FIU without FU.

I actually think there's always been quite a bit of potential at FIU, but they screw it up with ill-advised decisions -- hiring Isiah Thomas; firing a pretty decent football coach (Mario Cristobal) after one bad season and replacing him with a coaching retread who has no South Florida background (Ron Turner); and now this.

Bethune-Cookman beat FIU last year, 34-13, in a game where the two teams combined for 578 yards of offense. FIU had nine first downs.

Gotta take full advantage of these "You only cover us when we lose" moments ...

So is FIU's motto been changed to DISREGARD?

And FIU has 180 yards of offense in losing to Bethune-Cookman 14-12.

    FIU's statement today:

UPDATE: On Saturday, FIU sent the following statement in connection with Herald coverage of its football team:

"We are very disappointed that The Miami Herald has decided not to cover our football home opener, although we have credentialed members of the Herald staff. We did not issue a media credential to the Herald's beat reporter because of concerns we have brought up to the Herald's reporter and editors over the past few years about the reporter's interactions with our student athletes, coaches, and staff and the nature of the resulting coverage. He is not banned from FIU or FIU Stadium. He just does not have additional access beyond that of the public.

We welcome media coverage of our athletics program that is professional and respectful of our student athletes and our institution.

We will be meeting with the Herald's leadership in the next few days. We hope to reach a resolution and continue a positive working relationship."

Bullshit. They don't want negative coverage. Tough shit. And then they do shit like this and wonder why they get negative coverage. And what positive stories should we write about your shitty 1-9 football team? Fuck FIU.

I hope the Herald ran a two-inch brief and a box score.
Then it can ignore FIU on everything else until the school caves.

Be specific. What *exactly* are your "concerns?" And if any credentialed Herald staffers attended ... much less reported ... on the home opener, that would be disappointing and against the entire point of all this. FIU is wrong on every single point of this.

Again, one graf in the Sunday edition. Score. Deplorable attendance. The. End. Lower corner of 8C (of a seven-page section). No mention of this fiasco.
