I have not been to Ruth's Chris but I've avoided it because everyone I've talked to has had the same reaction to the place as those in this thread have. FWIW, the best steakhouse I've been to was Oak in Charleston, S.C. I've never really spent much time in NYC, though, so my experience is limited.

Ruth's Chris doesn't live up to the hype or their prices. I mean, it's a decent steak, but they really think a lot of it.

... and now I feel ashamed, mainly because I've criticized on here others' gripes about polite behavior. #hypocritenovelist

In New York, I like Keen's, Peter Luger and Gallaghers, in that order. As for chains, del Frisco's or Morton's serve a nice slab of meat.

Sparks is worth a stop if, like me, you're into mob history.

But not Sparks because the atmosphere is similar to a funeral home?

Ruth's Chris is the prime example, but all the chain big-time steak houses have priced themselves out of my market. I cook my own.
Ragu, I saw what you did there with Sparks!

Agree with this 100%, Mrs. Huggy and I went with another couple to celebrate our 10th anniversaries, complete waste of time and money. In other news, the meal I had at Morton's in Nashville is the best one I've ever had.

The sidewalk outside took a while to get cleaned up.

Best steak I've ever had was at a "rib house" in Arkansas.

Of all the top end steak houses I've visited, I'd have to give the edge to Bern's in Tampa. Liked the LA Palm, too.

Yeah, I think, most of the time, they're trying to figure out how familiar you are with the menu.
