Football in Los Angeles

My bet is, eventually, one of the prodigal franchises comes back.

If L.A. (at least the stadium group) has any choice, probably the Rams, because if it was the Raiders, there'd be no guarantee in five years they wouldn't be skipping off to become the No. 3 team in New York or something.

Although to some extent that's probably dependent on Al continuing to run the show, which he won't be doing more than a few more years.

My bet is if any serious noise rises about the Chargers (the third prodigal LA team) jumping back, San Diego will cough up some money for a new football stadium.

I remember at one point, shortly after the Alouettes folded, that Al had considered moving the Raiders to Montreal. But I don't know if this was just a rumor or something that was given serious thought.

I think people will come, just based on location. The neighborhood's built up quite a bit, and will probably build up even more, ala Camden Yards, AT&T Park, etc.

The area immediately around the Coliseum was a near-complete dump back when the Raidahs were there. No reason to stick around and spend money. Same for the Rams when they were at the Big A. Virtually nothing to walk to.

That same problemo is what hurts the City of Industry bid. There's nothing around there but train tracks and strip clubs.

If it's all greenlit and they get an NFL team, Farmer's Field's biggest problem as it stands now will be tailgating. Who the hell wants to tailgate in a parking garage?

I am asking because I heard that as many as two people want to bring IFL teams to Southern California. Los Angeles is one city with San Diego and Riverside being the other cities in consideration.

And as many as two people may show up!

    Kidding. But not by much...

Previous attempts at 50-yard football that I am familiar with in California have been in Fresno, Stockton, and San Diego (all af2). San Diego is the only one I am aware of from Southern Calif. What I did not understand is, since they need a big city to hold attention of fans, why the revamped AF1 did not find a way to form a team in L.A. (Yes, I know finances were responsible for why L. A. Avengers went under).

There's a few places where minor league teams in the shadow of a major league market succeed. LA isn't one of them. Does Long Beach still have an ECHL team? That league's disappeared off the map so quickly in the last couple of years, who knows? Indie baseball teams in Long Beach and Fullerton have hovered around the line between solvency and insolvency for years. Riverside might work ... I know they had an ECHL team at one time and its becoming a popular spot on the boxing circuit.

Nobody in Los Angeles or the immediate area care about any form of minor league sports.

Every minor league team to crop up in Long Beach has been a disaster, including the Long Beach Ice Dogs in the ECHL, and also including the flotsam that appears as minor league baseball in Blair Field.

AFL football in the city of LA is dead on arrival.

In the LA market, you would not get coverage. No beat writer. No columnist. Maybe an occasional feature if there's a really compelling human interest story. The team would play before hundreds of fans at a junior college field, then fold within two years. Total waste of an investment.
