I'm sure it was white as a debutante's ball, but the last time I checked the APSE convention wasn't a job fair.

are u kidding? all those conventions are giant job fairs. It's called networking. Guess you're just the last one to get the memo BB.

It's not set up to be a job fair. But it is a great place to network.

But what you inferred in an earlier post is that the APSE convention is low on minorities. Well, shame on them for not showing up to take advantage of such a wonderful opportunity, grizz.

And I didn't need the memo. I'm based in Las Vegas.

and shame on others for not being comfortable enough to attend the other journalism conventions such as NABJ, NAHJ, and so on. But wait, that would be absurd. Why bother learning about other cultures and take advantage of a job fair? That just doesn't make sense at all.

That doesn't happen nearly enough to justify the amount of "minorities are getting all the jobs!" cries going on here

Easy to say when it hasn't happened to you.

Because everyone knows employers go to NABJ job fairs to interview white guys.

Give me a break. A white reporter joining those organizations or attending their job fairs in order to angle for a job is unconscionable.

At one of my previous stops we had a female editor who would laugh out loud and make it a point to show it around the department when a guy listed AWSM on his resume. Back then they joined so they could use the AWSM jobs board without feeling like a heel. When she was feeling particularly frisky she would call the applicant and ask him about all the contributions he made to AWSM, how involved he was, which committees he volunteered for. She would get a lot of stuttering in response.

You're arguing with the wrong guy if you're under the impression I don't think minorities deserve job fairs to help them advance. I'm all for it. And that's precisely why white guys crashing their job fairs would be tacky and classless IMO.

But back the the APSE convention. It is an AWESOME place to network. You mentioned it's all white, though. What should we do, go round up minorities and drag them to the convention to make sure they get face time? You want to know why there isn't more diversity in the newsrooms, and yet no one of color is attending the Great APSE Annual Convention and Job Expo? Seems like they might want to drop by if they want it bad enough.

That's what I meant with my Animal House reference from before. When the white frat and sorority kids show up at the roadhouse to see Otis Day and the Knights and the place goes from euphoria to dead silent.

  10. All the B.S. is so easy to say when you haven't attended one. Just go and you'd be amazed (not to mention, you'd also have a good time).

Sorry, but it's how I feel. So I guess that makes it REALLY easy for me to say.

I would feel like a real jackoff crashing an organization's job fair to network. The whole reason the job fair is taking place is to help them advance in the profession. And I applaud it. So I'm not going to try to take one of their jobs.

Would I go to attend to sit in on the seminars and learn something about the profession? Sure. But I wouldn't go out of my way like I would a huge, all-inclusive job fair.

or even better, why not actually ask some minorities to actually get into the field of sports journalism at the collegiate level? hey, fuck, maybe then you could actually point fingers and have a valid complaint.

percentage-wise, who's the most unemployed, the white male sports journalist or the black male sports journalist? the answer is the female sports journalist, i'm guessing. i'm guessing white guy is probably No. 2.
