    Barq's has bite! Upstart spills past top seed in second round of SportsJournalists.com Soft Drink Wars, moves into Sweet 16

    WHY, Ariz. (SJ) -- Barq's has bite. And Coke has the teeth marks to prove it.

    The No. 9 seed in the Fizzy Regional, Barq's root beer knocked off perennial favorite and top seed Coke in the second round of the SportsJournalists.com Soft Drink Wars.

    Coke became the first No. 1 seed to fall out of the bracket. Barq's, meanwhile, is one of three members of the Root Beer Conference to move into the Soft Drink Wars' fabled Sweet 16 round.

    IBC Root Beer is one of only two double-digit seeds to win both of its first-round match-ups. IBC handled Diet Coke's aspartame press in the second round, which should give IBC's third-round opponent, Diet Pepsi, a reason to worry about its upstart foe.

    A&W Root Beer also won in the second round, easily ejecting RC Cola from the bracket.

    However, third-seeded Mug Root Beer, the highest-seeded root beer entry, won't be joining the rest of the RBC brethren after losing to No. 6 seed Cherry Coke in the Fizzy Regional.

    Welch's Grape, a No. 12 seed in the Delicious Regional, scored its second straight easy victory to make the Sweet 16. This time, it was Mountain Dew Code Red that felt the brunt of an obvious seeding error by the selection committee.

    The other three top seeds -- Pepsi, 7-Up and Sunkist -- all moved into the Sweet 16 with surprising ease, as did all four of the No. 2 seeds.

    The tiebreaker rule saved one No. 3 seed, as Diet Mountain Dew survived its tie with Slice to make it past the second round. But the tiebreaker couldn't save another three-seed, as six-seed Big Red blasted No. 3 Vault in the Delicious Regional voting to reach the third round.

    Voting for the third round of the SportsJournalists.com Soft Drink Wars will end at 11 p.m. MDT on Tuesday, Aug. 26. The remaining bracket....

    What the hell happened to Dr Pepper? It said all of the No. 2s moved on. I think the bracket is fucked up.
