Barq's, Dr Pepper, Sprite, Sunkist advance to Final Four

CANTON, Somewere (SJ) -- Name the four greatest sodas on Earth.

The correct answers are Barq's root beer, Dr Pepper, Sprite and Sunkist.

So say the voters in the SportsJournalists.com Soft Drink Wars. Don't like it? You only have yourselves to blame.

Barq's and Sprite had the easiest trails to the finals, as they easily defeated Cherry Coke and 7-Up, respectively, in the fourth round.

Dr Pepper and Sunkist, though, survived by a single vote apiece. Dr Pepper knocked A&W Root Beer out of the bracket by a 9-8 vote, while Sunkist topped Mountain Dew 9-8.

For the second straight vote, Dr Pepper knocked out a member of the resurgent Root Beer Conference -- the Dr beat IBC in the third round of voting. That's bad news for its Final Four opponent, Barq's, because the 23 flavors combo seems to have the style of the RBC figured out.

Barq's also had trouble with Dr Pepper's bastard cousin, Diet Dr Pepper, in the third round, barely escaping with the victory.

On the other side of the bracket, Sprite brings the most impressive resume, with no real close votes in any of its previous four victories.

By now, of course, the voters know how this is done. Voting for the final four round of the SportsJournalists.com Soft Drink Wars will be three days again; it will end at 11 p.m. MDT on Monday, Sept. 1.
