I actually think Dunne is sincere, if only because she’s never been a threat to max out her events in college. Every season that comes immediately after the Olympics, college judges swear that they will be cracking down on score inflation, no this time we totally mean it and won’t relapse. And so you’ve seen scoring take a hit this month. That’s really logical because in theory a 10 should be a rare thing, the result of a difficult routine executed perfectly. But human nature being what it is, people have gotten used to perfect scores and feel a little disappointed if they feel inaccessible. Last week Oklahoma had a couple of 9.95 scores on truly beautiful routines. And I do not doubt the judges legitimately spotted tiny mistakes that marked them down. But to my untrained eye on the 23rd row they looked flawless.
Upset is probably a little strong but this must have been a helluva meet. That’s national finals-level scoring.
