"But assuming the press reports are right, it's a terrible thing to say, and it unfortunate. And that's why—there was an earlier question about has the President said anything to people in his own party—they're reminders to all Americans that they need to watch what they say, watch what they do. This is not a time for remarks like that; there never is."

Outside a few remarks from Tip O'Neill I don't recall Beirut being a terribly politicized tragedy.

George Bush should have to answer for his behavior as well. As should Dick Cheney. The Marines in Benghazi volunteered as well. This is why a lot of people do not trust their government...they fuck up and we are lied to. Democrat, Republican...doesn't matter. If there were crimes committed there should be investigations and prosecutions. I have a lot of concern for the 4,000 dead American soldiers that are fighting a pointless war. They should be home with their families, not still over there providing the terrorists with a target rich environment.

What kind of "crimes" are we talking about?

I'm sure this is DB, but every time I check in I have the same thought. Isn't it well past time to rename this the 2013 Politics Thread?

Bush or Obama? Az, I would expect you, of all people on these boards, to want to see what really happened in Benghazi. Do you think lying to the American people about some kind of "spontaneous protest" over a video when it was obviously something else a crime? Tell me this, if the foreign press had never released the pictures of the embassy attack, showing no protest beforehand and a coordinated group of well-armed terrorists working with each other and people on the inside, we would yet know about what happened?

I think Bush and Obama are guilty of the same sin...using false intelligence to paint a picture to the American people that was not based in reality. And doing so knowingly. They should both be held to account for their sins.

Steep spending cuts can slow economic growth? Who knew?

President Bush certainly wasn't, hasn't been, and won't be held to anything by anyone.

You keep talking about Benghazi and "crime."

    What crime?

Ineptitude isn't a crime. Even lying in a press conference isn't a crime.

There's a slight difference between a misstatement on a morning talk show based on erroneous initial media reports and developing a campaign of lies to support an ill-advised and unprovoked war that cost billions of dollars and thousands of lives. I've yet to see one shred of evidence of this cover-up you and several others seem so certain about.

"Fact finding commission" was it, I think.

I don't recall Congressional hearings or any attempt to politicize Beirut. There was a DOD report aimed at fact finding and preventing similar incidents in the future. The military took the fall in the end but privately and in later years publicly Cap Weinberger blamed Reagan.

Yeah, 'Sote, it would have been far more prudent for 9 percent of the population to have nothing over the past four years instead of that darn unemployment compensation. Or for our food-creating system to not be regulated; e-coli ain't that bad. I could fill a screenful.
