Actually, the problem is bigger than that. It's the insurance-based healthcare system we currently have (and appear to be hell-bent-for-leather to continue on). We finance virtually ALL healthcare spending through one form of insurance or another. Insurance should be insurance -- i.e., protection against catastrophic loss -- rather than simply prepaid healthcare.

    100%.

Ooh, can I make a car analogy? Does anyone think Baron would mind?

If we used car insurance like we want to use health insurance, we'd want our car insurance to pay for our gas and oil changes.

That's not what insurance is for.

I humbly bow in Baron's direction.

I appreciate the memo's spelling of Al Qa’ida. It's very respectful. Kind of like how the President pronounces Pakistan.

Depend on the length of the warranty, I suppose, but let's at least acknowledge that a wealthy person probably doesn't have to think twice about replacing a transmission.

FYI, my employer views a strong benefit plan as a way to attract and keep top quality employees. I'm pretty sure that's the way most benefit plans begin.

When the masses start to realize the full monthly cost of health insurance you can bet that many will move to much higher deductible option and choose to pay out of pocket for routine health care.

Sure. WWII wage controls led to health plans being a (perhaps the) way to attract/retain employees (there were no caps on benefits). Some stuff happened before, but the shift to insurance as the primary financing vehicle started there.

Starting in FY 2014 these are going to be strictly limited ... something like $2,000 per year for single-person coverage and $4,000 a year for everything else.

In general, no. There's been some tweaking, but by and large deductibles are capped.

I would much prefer higher deductible / catastrophic type plan with lower monthly premium and pay out of pocket for routine medical

It's a smart way for wealthy people who don't anticipate difficulty meeting their high deductibles to handle their healthcare needs.
